Squeaking/chirping with clutch out

Ever since I got my car (2004 GT 6MT / 84k miles) a few weeks ago, it has made a squeaking/chirping sound while in neutral, with the clutch out. If you press in the clutch just a little, it goes away entirely. A little before engagement point (resistance area of pedal) begins, it's entirely gone.

Had a new clutch/TOB installed just a few thousand miles ago prior to my ownership.

I thoroughly researched this.. I really thought it sounded like the slave squeak people have talked about. I lubed it up with mobil 1 red synthetic grease. While I felt like it helped it didn't completely fix the problem. If you tap the clutch in a lil a few times sometimes it's as if you can position it to not make noise. So sometimes it's quiet, sometimes it's quite noticeable. So any help I may have thought the grease did was quite possibly not even related.

What I noticed yesterday as well (as it was being loud again) if I rev the engine the squeak/chirp increases in severity. It may just be reverberations from the engine or may be a rotational piece. I can't really tell if I can hear the noise while actually driving, over the road noise/exhaust etc.

Any help in diagnosis is much appreciated.. I really do not feel it's TOB related, especially since it has a new one. Not leaking any fluids. I'd like to fix it but I feel a lil stumped.

Here is a video I took that shows the sound.

The only thing I can think of (based on "behavior") is the input shaft bearing... any thoughts? Don't really want to drop the transmission :-\

It's not. It's more audible under the car, than engine bay. I did check the serp belts first, even though it's definitely clutch/trans related.

Cant watch the video but did they replace the pilot bearing when they did the clutch?

To my knowledge only the clutch/TOB were changed. It was done during the engine rebuild

got it top work on mobile. You'd think someone rebuilding an engine would replace the pilot bearing but who knows I guess. Doesn't really sound like a pilot bearing though. Usually that's more grindey.. Who did the rebuild?

Kevin @ Rotary Resurrection. I know the engine build is solid.. I did email him to confirm whether the pilot bearing was replaced, just to hopefully help narrow down what the sound could be. Because the car wasn't mine when the build was done, I don't have any actual documentation of parts used, etc.. but have spoken with Kevin about a few items, and he did send me the build pictures.

I would be relieved if you were correct in it not being a pilot bearing.

Can't tell much from that. Looks like it's in there (won't let me zoom much on mobile) but it could have been replaced before the clutch went on..

For what it is worth, mine does this too. Not so much a "chirp" but it sounds like when the clutch is fully depressed it is still "engaging" type of sound?

But when pressed it stops, exactly what you showed in your video. This has been going on for a long time for me (so not that big of a deal). I suspected it might be my clutch pedal as mine squeaks sometimes when pressing / depressing - might replace that soon anyways before it breaks.

But something to take a look at maybe? I did the same thing though and have had a new Excedy Stage 1 put on when I got a replacement engine from Mazda (put on by Mazda techs).

Jazer,

My 2006 GT just started making almost the exact same noise as you describe. Have you found anything more about what is going on with your car? I don't think mine is the clutch peddle, the sound is more under the car than inside the cab, or the engine bay. Hope it turns out ok for you.

Well I spoke with Kevin @ Rotary Resurrection via email (to see whether or not he had replaced the pilot during the car's rebuild), and his input was that it was NOT the pilot bearing or TOB ( I didnt suspect the TOB anyways) and adjusting the clutch pedal would fix the problem (so there is a slight amount of preload)... however Id rather not do that if it's only to correct a noise. I can live with the noise.

That is my thought, since I went from OEM to Excedy Stage 1, maybe it the pedal wasn't fixed to fully disengage?

Where is it catching? A new clutch will typically cause the pedal engagement to be lower on the pedal. As the clutch wears it will slowly move higher. You can adjust it (theres a how-to thread on this somewhere) if you want to adjust where youre engagement point is.

It's not catching (because nothing moves). It is just the same situation / sounds you are getting but I am pretty sure?? it only happened after the new clutch was installed? (There was only a one month time from getting the car and replacing the clutch and engine).

It would just be weird that when disengaged (the clutch) it will give the sound, but even if you just slightly push the clutch in a bit the sound disappears since you are disengaging the clutch.
