I have been noticing this noise "ssshhhhtttt" underneath the car. Is this how rotary sounds like?

 

Does it sound like a grinding noise? if you press your clutch does it go away?

 

I get a psssst kinda sound at about 3500 RPM. Was told it's normal. Is the "sshhhhtttt" sound constant or comes and goes with RPM, etc.?

Could it be an exhaust leak or something?

 

It comes and go and I hear it no matter what the rpm is.

 

If it comes and goes it's probably not normal

 

Hmm I'm not sure. But when I start my car I smell exhaust fume or something I dont know.

 

I was told that rotary has diff sound to them. Like you can tell if an 8 is coming cuz the way it sounds like from the outside. I hear this but very faint. I'm suspecting its my axle.

 

I always here an SHHHHTTT sound, but it is just the intake sucking in air...unless its really not and I also have the same problem

You've had your car for a while.. I don't think you should be smelling fumes.. have you had a catback installed recently or something?

Yes the rotary has a distinct sound.. it doesn't sound like shhhh tho,, more like arrrrrrr..

Not to change the subject but I was checking my oil and the dipstick had brown stuff on it. Could it be because of the cold weather?

 

Thear are a bunch of threads about milky dipstick.. I haven't read them, so I don't know what the issue is.

 

I have greddy catback. I bought my car last aug with 8k miles.

 

do you hear the noise only when the car is moving, or do you hear it on idle?

 

Ha yeah it definitely does, it is basically non existant :p

 

Any way you can record it and post the sound file somewhere?

 

Well there used to be this noise while on idle but since mazda had changed the spark plugs and after my car flooded the noise had went away. As far as the sssshhhhtt sound i only hear this when the car is moving.

 

Even if I record it I dont know if you guys will hear what I'm hearing when i'm driving the car. When Im in my car you hear hhmmmm from the exhaust and plus this sssshhhhttt noise so it will be hard to record this I think.

did you say you have an intake? My intake makes that sound where it sounds like a vacuum is on at idle. I think someone had a video clip of the K&N intake and you can hear the sound at idle.

 

I took those little plastic things out of my intake (when my car ran) and it started making that "sucking in" sound, sounds sweet to me!
