Angry Starting issue Cold start.

Alright i was having problems starting my Rx8 lately. i had my girlfriend record the noise in the engine when i started it.

Here is the video it take about 15seconds before you start to hear something on the video. Dont know if anyone can listen to it and tell me if it seems to be my starter.

Just click on the name of the video to hear it.

The next day i came to take my rx8 out for a drive and the car would not start at all. so i recorded the noise once again. i was about to order a new starter but i want to be sure thats my issue first.

Here is the second video where the rx8 does not start at all. i even put the booster pack on.

Just click on the name of the video to hear it.

From the second video, I would say it's your starter. Because you can tell it isn't even turning (so the engine isn't turning) so that would rule out it being an ignition issue. But that is my guess.

It's the battery clamps.

It's ALWAYS the battery clamps.

Grab each clamp and give it a good twist - if it moves, even a little, that's a bad connection.

....and you can't just tighten them up, take both off and clean them with a wire brush, then re-connect.

It's ALWAYS the battery clamps.

Haha i checked the clamps and one was a bit lose but that does not seem to be the cause sadly.

Here is a other video of the engine bay. The staps dont seem to want to turn this might give insight on whats wrong.

Unplugged the 2 clamps cleaned it with a metal brush pluged the battery back. Everything is tight no wiggle room. Charged the battery till it was full. And the car barely started took a good 45seconds of cranking the engine and it seem to be having a hard time turning over. Llights from the door were flashing.

So not the battery. Could it be the alternator.

Is there a way to test. Alternator a home easy. Before spending 315$ for a alternator.

I think you need a new battery. Sometimes charging doesn't work and you just have a replace it. Why not take it to a battery shop and get it tested for sure?

Alternator shouldn't impact your ability to start.

The alternator basically handles electricity produced from your running engine,

You can start a car with a faulty alternator, but you will see weird things happen with the electricals, and the battery will die quickly (as it is not being charged by the alternator during engine operation)

Does it start with a boost?

'Nisaja' is right; a charge means little if the cells don't hold the juice.

A quick boosted start means that power isn't getting to the clamps - either bad connections or a dead battery.

(It's still the battery clamps!)

What's the story with ignition leads and ignition coils would they cause this behaviour?

They wouldn't be to blame for slow cranking speed.

Seems StealthTL was right once again. My Optima redtop battery only had 1 of the 6 cells working. The battery is dead.

Got a new battery and a Volt meter to test for dark current.

I don't know why people keep insisting on buying those things.

Because they used to be good

A while back they went down hill in a big way..... Some can't accept it, some don't read so they don't know.

Must have been old reviews. Think they changed manufacturing facilities or something, a few years back, and have been **** ever since.

A while ago I bought a Northstar AGM battery for my STi (group 35) and it was amazing. If you're looking for one of the nicest batteries money can buy, look for one of those.
