^are you sure you didnt cross some of the plug wires. It is easy to plug a wire into the wrong plug.

I changed them one by one, not to mix them up. And power is ok above 4500rpm. The new "lead" plugs are type 6, old ones were type 8. Could that cause the problem?

Edit: The problem was because of the plugs. Changed back the old RE8C-L plugs and now it runs perfect.

^Duh Scott! Yeah all you gotta do is remove the cat and run some soapy water through it and call it a day. I thought everyone knew that?

FIXED IT!!

It was the coils.. Just did it today.. I'm so stupid, I should have done it a long time ago! It took me a whopping 25 minutes.

It seemed to fix all the problems I was having from starting to the power loss.. I was actually able to accelerate up a hill in sixth gear, It was amazing and made me smile the rest of the way home.. lol

I almost forgot to thank everyone for their help.. I finally decided it was most likely the coils after reading bulletproof21's posts.. I did not get the bhr coils, the oem coils should hold me over for a while.

I didn't really need a DIY, just looked at it for a sec then went to town.. Only had to remove the box on the side of the intake (not sure what it is or does) and I was able to reach all of them fairly easily. Burned my hand about five times though.. but it was worth it!

edit: I put the box thing back...

The problem is very little power under about 4200 rpm after that it takes off like normal, fast as could be. It does not buck or misfire, just does not accelerate smooth anymore. I cannot get the tires to spin, even when its wet out, no torqe at all. Its also taking longer to start than normal, probably 3 to 4 seconds as apposed to right when I turned the key before. It always starts and has never stalled while driving. No cel either.

I have changed the plugs, wires, air filter and cleaned the MAF. I also seafoamed it twice following the procedure I found here. I looked at the cat after driving for a while and noticed glowing red around the O2 sensor, not sure if that is normal or not. I called the dealership and they had me come in for the "power loss" recall which did nothing, but it was free so I figured it wouldn't hurt. I am trying to save 90 bucks by not taking it to the dealership to have them tell me whats wrong. I would think the coils would cause a chugging or bucking, but I could be wrong. So any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Robert
Rob,

I have an 05 AT rx8. My car has been giving me hell as well. You may have a TCL (torque convter lockup) or a CAT problem like everyone has told me. My car is at 66K or so and this started happening to me around 35K and 31K more miles deep not one person including MAZDA can fix my car. I have tried Tranny flush, I have tried changing coils, air filters, spark plugs, and I have tried a fix for the TCL and nothing! My check engine light came on recently and its saying that I have a slow leak in a hose. Just sounds like your car is having the EXACT SAME issues as mine. I am making an appointment in a couple of weeks to see WTF is wrong with my car. I think its f'n bullshit that I paid 30K for a car and they tell me that they cant fix it! I bought a AT because I hate driving in the snow with an MT. I cant trade this car in becuase I still owe money on it and if I did trade it in my car payments would be a car payment of someone who drives a frigin corvette. You bet ur *** if I have a car payment that high that it will be a vette and not an rx8.

I do love my car becuase I loved the way she was when I first got her. I love the handling on the RX8's, I love the look, I love the style, and I love how we can redline at high rpms but, I am stuck with this car until its paid off. And trust me I will trade this in for an MT RX-8. You can bet ur *** on that!

Keep in touch with me beucause if you get anything done in the meantime and it helps, let me know and vise versa for me.

Good luck!
~ Kim

power loss here too

In the past this car was what I consider powerful. But about a month ago now my 2004 with 9x,xxx miles maybe has power loss below 5000 RPM, it "bogs" a lot when starting away from stand-still, is slightly harder to start -- feels like it's missing, and when you floor it in 4th it does not accelerate at all whereas it used to accelerate very nicely on the highway. My wife agrees it is slower.

Carbon buildup?
Low compression?
Coils?

I maintain this car carefully and very completely. I am Original owner.

I am suspecting this car has carbon buildup and low compression.

I guess the compression test can only be done by Mazda dealerships -- can anyone confirm that independent shops are able to do the compression test on Rx8?

It's almost getting strange how a thread about "power loss", which has coils suggested, and confirmed, multiple times, is still getting "how about me?" posts, rather than "oh, I got new coils, it runs great!"
