Sucking up oil into intake.

Hey Guys,

I've owned my RX-8 for quite some while now. After having a new engine about a year ago I noticed it started to suck up oil every now and then when I revved up real high in third/fourth gear (heavy load).

Big clouds of white smoke came out, typical oil burning looks. After waiting for the smoke to clear out and the oil to be burned out of the engine I stopped it and found everything in the intake to be smudged with oil. Yuck...

Cleaning it is a hell, the filter box (and resonator thingy attached to it) was full with oil.

After having it cleaned it happened again later. In my desperate attempt to stop it from happening again, I pulled the oil pan vacuum hose. Then I closed of the hole that this leaves in the intake hose.

I don't really have an oil catch pan yet, I even ordered one at this moment. But the catch pan is just a cheap fix in this case. It keeps my intake clean, but I don't want my oil to be sucked out overtime I step on the REX's tail.

I'm 100% positive that I didn't overfill it, I tend to keep it at 50% between MIN and MAX on the stick. Why the heck does my REX suck in oil? I even tried a clean filter because I thought it might be sucking a vacuum or something.

Thanks!

Oil pan vacuum hose? The crankcase ventilation setup was redesigned in 2006 to fix this issue. Get a catch can, it will fix your issues.

That's what I meant indeed, didn't know what to call it in english. Catch can is on it's way. It does seem like a lot of oil when I need to clean it out.

Does everyone have this issue with the RX-8? It seems like every owner has a defective setup in that case.

Not everyone, it seems to happen randomly. It only happened to me once while I was stock.

9.5 years and it never happened to me on my Dec/2004 build that still has all the original piping, typically indicates a sealing issue/excessive blowby into the crankcase

The piping was redesigned for the milky water/oil condensation issue, not blowby

This is always why I thought the two were the same TSB, i never actually ever read the TSB until now, it doesn't mention oil in the intake, despite Ash's description.

Well that service recall does state 'milky dipstick and oil in the intake'. Funny thing is; I do see milky oil really fast. Even though I drive long distances. That could mean I don't have this service recall done yet..

I will try and look for the sticker of the new hose layout.

I couldn't find the sticker anywhere. Not quite sure if the reroute has been done. A trip to the technician I guess!

Just disconnect the tube from the air intake and cap it.
Take the filler pipe hose and Put a filter on it.

regardless, when you look at the details of the TSB and rerouting of hoses it leaves very little chance of oil getting back into it.
