Surging idle

This car is driving me nuts. For several months my engine has been surging by about 700 rpm from idle. When I first start the car with a cold engine, it idles very high (about 3500) and then as it drops it begins to bounce, as though it's trying to recover from dying. If I press in the clutch, it goes away. As the drive-train warms up it eventually stops. The check engine light is on alot, too. I've taken it to the dealer four times now and left it overnight, but they can't recreate it (which I find hard to believe) and the check engine light always turns off on my way to the shop. I want to sell this car but can't because it's apparently unfixable. Any similar experiences? Thanks.

nuetral pos switch... actually, the dealer found that as a stored code even without the light. He checked the switch and said it was fine and then reflashed the computer with several upgrades. It runs smoother now but still has the same basic problem.... thanks for the heads up.

I also suspect the O2 sensor/convertor or another environmental issue that could affect the fuel mixture but the dealer won't check anything out without being able to recreate the issue. It seems that it goes away only after the whole drive-train has heated up (ie after the engine temp has been warm for a while) which makes me suspect something downstream of the engine. Thanks for all the suggestions.
