taking a trip....is my 8 car safe?....

car is 2005 with 70k kms on it; runs like a champ, never had any issues, serviced every 5000kms; coils are original, 2 plugs changed out (as per tsb) at 20k kms, the other two are original; cat is original; car fires up and runs just like new;

i am taking a trip to toronto and back over the next couple of weeks (around 3200 kms) and am concerned about my rx8 since i had a incident around 4 days ago;

basically, i was driving down the street doing around 60km/h revving around 6000 when the car lost power for a split second, the exhaust popped lightly a few times; no cel or anything else and the car went back to normal immediately after;

car was 3/4 full with gas at the time, going down a straightaway;

i have driven the car since then several times and have had no issues at all since;

while i want to take the car into the dealer, they cant take me until next week and i wanted to leave this week;

i have a spare set of plugs and coils, should i get a local mechanic to swap them in just in case?;

what are the chances that my cat gives out on me during the trip?

what would you do, assuming you could not get it into the dealer?;

any thoughts or opinions appreciated;

thanks;

I took my RX8 on a 4,000 mile road trip a little over a year ago. Ran perfectly, no problems.

thanks; i have taken several long trips in my 8, i love it on the highway; i wouldnt want to be out there without it;

however, i am concerned b/c of the recent popping/misfire that i had; i am hoping that my cay is not going to go out no my while i am away;

i am thinking of just having the plugs and coils changed and then going with that; the battery also has 70k kms on it, but i dont think that would cause my issue but perhaps it should be changed out too;

sounds like you'll be ok with plugs and coils. I drove about 1500 miles needing plugs/coils/wires but they were in oklahoma already and i was in DC. Worked out fine. This was about 40k miles (so very similar).

i went from San jose -> Tahoe -> Salt Lake City -> Utah -> Vegas -> LA -> San Diego -> and back to SJ ....over 3K miles in a week without issue ....

the only thing that scared me was the oil light came out ...and i found out that it was normal for an 04 oil pan problem, so it was fine....

besides all that , i think if your car runs great now , dont change anything...because i personally have this believe/superstitions that things go wrong after i change stuff....so i would leave it till the trip is over..

have fun on your trip ! bring extra oil !

I had that same thing happened to me once, one of my coils died after a couple of days.

thanks for all the replies guys; much appreciated;

i do agree, everytime i try to be proactive about fixing something, something else goes wrong!!!;

having said that, i called the dealer again today and they let me drop my car off and they are going to swap in the coils and plugs today and/or tomorrow so i will be good to go for t.o.;

yiksing, thanks for the tip, i was worried about that so thats why i am glad i the dealer is gonna help me out;

thanks everyone;
