CO Thermostat O-Ring / Coolant Leak Question

First off, many thanks to RotaryResurrection, JonG316, 9krpmrx8m, Teamrx8, olddragger and others who helped immensely in removing my engine and replacing it with a reman. I've never worked on engines in my life so this was a big undertaking for me. It definitely wasn't easy but with your help I got it done. I finally drove my car again last Thursday & Friday and it's running great.

Now I'm dealing with a coolant leak that seems to be coming from the thermostat housing. Here is my old therm:

Here is my question, does #6 in the diagram (O-ring) correspond with the black rubber piece in my picture? Or is there another ring that sits above the black one? What is misleading is that in the diagram the black ring appears to be on the thermostat, but it is not listed to the right. Am I missing an O-ring?

Any help is much appreciated

Yes, just replace the T-stat. It comes with a new o-ring.

Sorry if I was unclear.

I installed a brand new thermostat with the reman along with a new ring that matches the one in my photograph.

I'm asking if there is another ring besides the one in the picture that I am possibly missing as the diagram I posted seems to show one ring on the therm and then #6 in addition to that.

The O ring in the diagram is the only one. It and #6 are the same. Hope that helps.

Paul.

OK thanks. I appreciate it.

I'll have to look elsewhere for the coolant leak...

make sure the seal fits on like the picture and isn't kinked or it can leak

Yes

Note the rubber tab on the lower right side of the thermostat in the pic. Theres a grove in the housing that it fits into.

Cool, thanks guys. Upon further review, the leak seems to be coming from here (where I drew the red line):

Between the lower thermostat housing and the block. The lower thermostat housing came already installed on the reman with a new water pump. If I'm not mistaken, this leak is Mazda's fault.

I guess I'll have to remove it and throw some silicone on it.

I actually do have that gasket (unused) because it came with the gasket kit that came with the reman. I didn't use it because I assumed they installed it properly. Clearly I was wrong.

i always used a black silicone gasket stuff on the thermostat housings--one that goes on the block and the cover. I also do the same for the omp mount. I call it prevenitive
Dude is it just the picture or is one of your omp lines not filled with oil?
Congrats on the install---learned a lot didnt ya!

Thanks od. I learned a TON.

The omp line that looks empty is brand new. I had to replace that one because it cracked when I was installing the omp.

Is there some secret to removing the bolt that goes here?:

I've removed all the hoses around it, the thermostat cover and everything else I can remove conveniently. Is there a way to get this out without removing the engine again??

Yes, it can be removed and installed in the car, but be careful working around and/or moving the plastic OMP lines as they can get brittle with age and crack if tweaked too hard. One of the brackets that holds them in place mounts between the housing and the mounting bolt. You have to pull it out of the way to get the housing off so just be careful

Do not use rtv unless you like having an unnecessary mess to clean up later. The OE gasket and clean surfaces should seal fine without it. Mine never leaked.

Well, sure enough, once I got it off, I saw there was no gasket installed.

Another win for Mazda..... Moral of the story is that I should have checked it when I got the reman instead of assuming they installed it properly..... I'm hoping this is my final project before I really get to break in this reman.
