Total stupidity- I ran my rx-8 out of oil now it runs like crap

i have an '07 rx-8 and shes ran perfect the whole time i've had her. until recently i went about 7K miles past due for an oil change (out of sheer stupidity and laziness) so i'm at about 85mph on the freeway and my dash lights up like its stalled and my speed starts decreasing and i can't get it in gear to speed back up. finally i get it in 4th and speed back up and my oil level drops to below low. i put a quart in just to get me back to work. i changed my oil that night and now the oil light goes on and off on and off depending on speed. someone help!! please. i don't want my baby to die or have any major problems.

So you went a total of 10k miles without an oil change?

Is there something not right in your head?

If you seriously ran "out of oil" you are going to have far more severe issues than just an oil light that comes on and off. How many quarts did you put in the car during your oil change. Did you confirm you did infact fill it up to the nominal level?

1. Low oil level light should come on before engine damage
2. If oil pressure gauge drops and you continue driving, you have probably caused damage (it is not a true gauge, but only an indicator)
3. Is it really possible you don't check your oil level on a car that is designed to consume oil? Do you not check your fuel level either?
4. If this is your "baby", you are an abusive/neglectful parent.

No sympathy from me....

if you already didn't kill your bearings and apex seals you can try this:

put 1/2 bottle of seafoam in you oil with car already at operating temperature..let it idle for 10-15min. change oil and filter. drive one day and change oil again.

7K past due for an oil change, really that's beyond just forgetting.

This isn't a civic, you can't treat it like one. Grow up, be responsible.

The long oil change interval isn't much of a problem... heck dumb some european service manuals advice\mandate to change the oil every 12k miles. It's stupid and shouldn't be done but still...

The real questions is, did you EVER top your oil off during that long interval? You know our car burns oil... right?

It probably doesnt matter in this case, but oil "additives"(use that loosely for seafoam in this application) are real tough to get out of our oil system. If you only drain from the plug you can get a little over 5 quarts out of a ~7 quart system but that takes a long time. Even if you change the oil again soon after there will still be seafoam in there. For something that says do not leave in past 100 miles that sounds like a bad idea.
