Transmission Grind

Hey all,

I have a 2005 with 76k miles on it. I had the 60k mile service done a while back when I bought the car so they replaced the transmission gear oil and I've had them check it more recently because I've been having some problems (I think) lately. They say everything's normal, but whenever I shift into 2nd or 3rd i hear a grind/crunch. It will sometimes go away with time (driving, I guess some of the oil gets a bit thinned out and covers more of the gears) but it sounds really bad and I feel its getting worse.

I don't really know what it is, maybe someone could shed some light on the situation.

Thanks,

Jordan

does it grind when you stop and push into the gears without touching the clutch?

No, it only grinds when moving. Sitting still it goes through the gears no problem at all.

The grinding could be due to worn transmission synchronizers (not uncommon). There are many reports of this, especially for 2nd gear.

It can also be caused by a dragging clutch that is not disengaging completely. This could be due to a bad pedal bracket assembly (known issue), poor pedal adjustment, a weak clutch master cylinder, or broken clutch pressure plate release fingers.

A good mechanic should have no trouble diagnosing the actual root cause.

I had looked up some information on bad synchros but could never find a definitive symptom of them.

My pedal bracket actually snapped right before the recall came out, but a friend of mine welded it back and its much stronger now. My clutch is also original so it may be just worn out.

I guess I'll take it to someone other then the dealer, I've just been going to them cause they actually haven't charged me for any work other then the 60k service.

Thanks for your input.
