Transmission Issues/Questions
#776
i just bought a 04 Rx8 6speed trans... i dont know if anyone else has had a issue like this but my transmission makes a wisping/ metal on metal sound in neautral, 2, 4, 5 and 6th. doesnt do it in 1st 3rd or reverse. also my gas mileage is no where near where it should be.... i took test sample from the gas stations i use and none had water.... would the trans be causing the MPG issue? the car only has 70k miles on it. the dealer already said they would fix it since i just bought it 2 weeks ago and 300 miles ago, but i dont want to look like a idiot if they start spouting of BS.

I just bought an 8 with 65k on it and I've got all the symptoms described practically, but after changing the fluid out with an Amalie fluid, the shifts are smoother. I had the car on the lift and left it running and the metallic pinging noise at idle that annoys me was coming from the case. I thought it was, but wasn't 100% until I was under the car. But, luddy, what did you expect the fuel economy to be? I'm getting about 17mpg right now, but that's what I expected. I went from 19-20mpg in my MSP and it was rated at 25 city/31 highway.

It is... I was talking about my MSP (Mazdaspeed Protege). I get horrible fuel mileage in it when comparing it to the listed numbers. But it's fully built and relatively high boost (16psi) for the FS motor and GT25s limits.

Clutch or Transmission Problem?
As I was driving yesterday, I could hear a chirping sound from under my car. When I pressed the clutch in the noise went away. As soon as I engaged the gear and continued driving the noise continued. Then all the sudden my clutch pedal sank to the floor. I heard metal scraping, so I stopped the car. Ive had my car sit over night, and just started it. It started making all kinds of whinnying and metal grinding sounds in neutral. With the clutch pushed in all the sounds stopped.

Alright I am trying to pin down what ever is wrong with my car, and I am hoping you guys could help. I have only had my car for about 5 months and 6k miles, and already had a lot of problems so I want to make sure the dealership is not trying to screw me cus I already got screwed for 3.2g due to being in a rush and listening to everything the dealership told me.
Alright now to the problem. For about 3 months now (ever since I got my clutch replaced) there has been an odd whirring or water rushing sound coming from my transmission. The noise is very noticeably louder in 6th gear and if in neutral at high speeds. Also car will not want to go into gear sometimes, especially into 1st. Finally the clutch began to squeak for the past 2 weeks.
I had it checked out at the dealership and they said some part ( can't remember what right now) in my transmission that connects to some axle is worn out, and I need a tranny rebuild; however, no one there can rebuild a tranny. I am kind of confused because I thought the driveshaft connects to the tranny before any kind of axle. Also is this a transmission problem or maybe a flywheel, pressure plate, or clutch being misaligned?
I need to know for sure before I go out and buy a tranny.
Thanks,
Mike

you can check the PPF alignment/height position per the FSM (see attached)
going to 75W140NS Redline oil will quiet it some
otherwise this trans is a bit noisy in that regard, but when one or more bearing goes bad it will be *really* loud like a supercharger whine that stops when you push the clutch in
whatever you do don't have a dealership do it, I would suggest contacting Charlie @ Mazcare for advice in your area. He is a member here, but not sure how much he's around these days

so i finally got my rx8 back.... made the dealer rebuild the trans at no cost to me... all i payed for was a exedy stage 1 clutch... are the manual transmission in these rx8's normally on the noisy side??? also after the break in period i was going to dump the fluid and refill with royal purple.... anyone know if you can run GM syncromesh????

I joined the transmission woe group...... I went to the track and had a hardtime rev matching to 2nd gear and going into 4th. I changed the fluids and gears seems to go in better, but that 2nd is still has a grind rev matching into it. Hopefully with time it gets better, but I think I might be on the road to a new tranny.

there's no point opening it up without also fully disassembling it for all new bearings at a minimum and you might as conduct a full inspection too, which given the cost of parts and labor you can get into the cost for a decent used trans or even the cost of a new/rebuilt one depending if you have a friendly drivetrain/race shop doing it or getting hosed by a dealership/chain transmission shop
swapping one in on your own or with assistance is quite possible, but rebuilding one yourself isn't. They require a number of special tools. I was recently quoted $1100 for the full list of special service tools and this was with my Motorsport discount. Some of them can be replaced by less costly generic tools you can buy locally, some can't or at least not without experimenting and finding out what it will take. Then you still get into the parts cost. I saw an online gear shop recently selling the full 6-spd synchro/bearing kit for almost $1400, and then there are various other parts that will be needed in addition to this. A countershaft is $500+, a single gear (not the mating pair) is $300+, etc. You just won't know what you have until opening it up.

so should i start saving up for a low miles tranny 06 and up, so i can just get it swamp out when it does go out. I plan to track it till the 2nd gear syncro goes out but it just sound terrible rev matching because of the grind.

some of the parts aren't that expensive, the issue is that they add up quickly if you need more than a few
I'd say for that price they're only going to do the minimum amount of disassembling and parts replacement possible. Typically the trans disassemble and rebuild labor alone is $400 - $700 and the labor for removing and installing the trans in the chassis can also be about that much.
How many miles on your clutch? You might consider at least a new disc and throwout bearing while the trans is out.

I live in a relatively competitive market in SoCal, so we have a bit better pricing. The clutch has less then 10K miles on it so it is pretty new. My tranny isn't even in too bad of a condition and the only time I experience grind is downshifting into 2nd.

Hard into 2nd
Bought an 05 with 44k on it 2 months ago. It is hard to go 1-2 and 2-3, no grinding, just real hard. I put MT-90 in it, still real hard, doesn't matter whether it is warm or not. Clutch feels fine, no slip, and all other gears including reverse are fine. No trans noises either except for the usual t/o bearing whine. Any other ideas? Thanks and if my answer is in one of the years of replies sorry but no time to read them all
Put redline MTL in, shifting still sucked. Switched to ENEOS, night and day difference, almost like new so I sold the used trans I bought. Swerve Motorsports on ebay has the best deal on it.

when I shift into 2nd from 1st I have to take to it only 5k and hold the clutch till it drops a few thousand rpms. in order for it not to grind. or I can take it higher if I hold the clutch and double tap the gas then go into second. but it doesn't always work just a temp thing in order to reduce the loud grinding noise
