Water Pump repair - over priced dealer help

Water Pump Dealer price check
I had a rough night Sunday. I broke down on the jersey turnpike about 20 minutes out of NYC. My water pump pretty much took a dump, coolant everywhere, it was done for. I had to have it towed to the closest Mazda dealership, Sansone Mazda in Avenel, nj. They looked at the car today and they determined it was exactly as i had thought the water pump.

The help that i need from the club is that I think I'm being taken advantage of. He quoted me $450 to replace the water pump.

Parts:
water pump - 158
gasket - $15
coolant - $32
Diagnose fee - $90.
labor $155.

I called 3 dealerships in the Philadelphia area and they all quoted me from $258-$287.
labor $151
parts $107 to $136 between the 3 dealerships (nucar, martin, pacifico).
That's a difference of more then $160 bucks.

Whats with this diagnose fee, when i told them i was 90% sure it was the water pump. Usually if you have the person do the work for you they don't charge you for diagnoses. Isn't that there in case you leave and don't have them fix the car. Whats with charging a huge markup on parts. the msrp is only 97.72 for the water pump.

I can't tow it somewhere cause its going to cost to much. My car is 1.5 hours from where i live and i would normall do something like this myself or have nucar do it, but thats not an option.

What do i do?

I use nucar mazda for everything i do, i was thinking about calling them back and see if they could call up there and say something. My dad was a salesmen for 20 years and he said they used to do it for long time customers in situations like this.

Labor 155 ?

pay me 50 bux + toll fee to go NJ which is maybe 8 bux + maybe a beer or something I will drive over and fix ur water pump for you. All could be done in about an hour. I can bring coolant too just pay me back the cost, Im sure its WAY LESS THAN 32 Cuz u just need about 2-3 gallon and u're set.

the water pump gasket cost like 5 bux online, and brand new stock pump cost about 80.

good luck with trying to get nucar to do anything for you. not like Sansone gonna care.

Dude i completely agree, and I really want to just buy the parts and do it myself. The only questions is where am i going to do it. I don't think they would take kindly to me taking apart my car in the middle of there parking lot.

If you were willing to help i would totally give you 50 bux buy you many beers. I could do it myself but I've never did a water pump, changed a few serpentine belts in my days. I'm sure it would take me about 2 hours.

I guess we could push it out to the street, there might be a parking lot somewhere close.

They know they have you bent over in the parking lot

You either have to pay...or fix it in the lot...or tow it somewhere else

Dealerships like that make me puke!

I wouldn't put it past this place that if i do move it out of the dealership that they would charge me a storage fee or something stupid

Well. I have everything EXCEPT the water pump itself (yep, I even have a brand new water pump gasket in my garage, I have lots of parts )

so if u wanna make this "work". You have to get the pump yourself. or I have to order it right now and "god knows" and it takes like 20 bux for overnight shipping so ... and I don't think the dealership will let you park your car there for more than a day (if u're not fixing it there) so ... btw I just checked my receipt and my coolant cost me 15 bux for 2 gallon Its Peak's 50/50 premixed stuff. not some no-brand el-cheapo

lemme know what you think

^ that would be funny. We can include the video in the DIY section

I'm so disgusted at this place that in the end if it costs me the same amount of money and I'm not giving it to those guys I'll be happy. I have a friend that lives about 14 miles in east brunswick, I can have it towed there. He said it can sit there for awhile no problem. I can buy the parts from this place if it comes to that, i mean he already ordered them. Let me see how much there going to charge me and how much a tow is going to be. I'll call everywhere first thing in the morning. Then i will call you as soon as i know. I sent you a pm

Im checking some prices too. I "might" be able to get it for less than 80. Not 100% sure yet tho.

Just just pm me when u know what you wanna do. if the dealership is nearby some highway like Wayne, We can just push it out and we'll just install this @ the shoulders.

i'd pay a little extra and buy it from a dealer to have it fixed this weekend. People shipping it is going to take forever cause of the holiday and if they are filling orders too. But it looks like this plan is going to happen.

call Triple A, get it towed. Hell, even a friend of yours can use THEIR triple A card to tow your car. (they just need to be present)

Mazmart Water pump FTW

Why would anyone put the stock unit back on? I would have been glad to have sent you one already.

Here's the link: http://www.mazmart.com/PartsList.aspx?id=27&n=NEW&m=6

I know it costs more but the timing is perfect: Bad pump out, SUPERIOR PUMP in.

+1 for the mazmart upgrade when your pump needs to be replaced. I am still waiting for mine to go "TU" so I can get this too.

Thanks Shaunv. I look forward to serving you.

By the way, the currrent suggested retail on the stock unit from Mazda is around $100 plus a $25 core charge. A new development.

maybe he just wanna keep his warranty.

cuz Im pretty sure dealership will NOT want to see the aftermarket pump. cuz once its installed. there is NO WAY that they will know UNLESS they take it all apart ... or just switch it back to stock before you go replace your engine (if needed ... hope not)

Oh yes Paul's pump ROX! Ahh ... I feel proud to be one of the first new "pumpppp" owner

We offer the OEM 09 pump on my site as well. It will not fit the ealier cars at all. I was doing a lot of early investigating and concluded that it won't work nor will the tail lamps from 09.

Hey guys looks like i got screwed, he did the old i'll call you back. Then when he does call me back he says the guys is already working on it and "he is trying to get it done as soon as possible for me" Well we'll see what happens but looks like i got screwed. Thanks for everybody's help this situation as a whole totally sucks and it couldn't come at a worst time, i would put a better pump on but i need my car for tomorrow to travel on thanksgiving. Its just a utter mess. Even if i had it towed somewhere the guy wants me to pay a diag fee and storage fees. So i'm just going to pay it so i can be done with this crap shoot of a gigantic dick in the a$$ mess.
