Wont start when the engine is hot

My wife has a 04 rx8 6sp has 128000 miles on it. She has been havine a problem with it not wanting to start back up while she is running errands and stuff. It seems that if it sits for about 20 mins of so it will crank back up, it also takes 10-20 secs for it to start on these cold mornings. I changed the plugs and coils back in April or May. Took it to the delership and they said it needs a motor $4000. Any advise would be great.

have the battery tested for the cold start issue. do you know if the starter was ever replaced? fuel pump ever replaced?

what did the dealership do to determine you needed a new engine?

Warm start issues are commonly linked to poor compression. Get to your local dealer and have the compression checked. Especially since you recently swapped out the coils and plugs.

do you know if the engine has been replaced before? If so, how many miles on the new?
are you feeling any power losses at low/ high rpm's?
what is your gas mileage like?

Ours has lasted over a year, but is getting worse. Im wondering if the dealership is the only place to get another engine.

It's up to you (beaux312) if you have a lot of dough. Dealerships charge more because they do...

The original starter is physically smaller (shorter) than the newer, faster starter.

If you get under the car, driver's side right under the door, and look next to the transmission you can see it. Take a side-profile pic of the starter and post it.

Also, has the engine been de-carboned lately?
