Yet Another Cooling Problem
I have the mazport cooling fan mod installed as of yesterday. After about 10 mins of idling, the coolant gauge goes over half. I have the obd port connected to my laptop for real time readings, and the coolant temp goes to 138, stays there for a minute and goes back down to 225-230. This happens daytime and night time. I checked the cooling fans and can say the driver side fan is sucking tremendous amounts of air in. I did the paper test and it practically sucked the paper halfway through the fins of the condenser. The passenger side is hard to tell, I feel warm air on that side barely blowing out. The radiator and condenser is new, no blockages. I have the racingbeat radiator screen, does that mess airflow up? Tried the searches and they aren't worth crap to me, at least on my computer. Just pulls up every post with the word cooling fan in it, most not even relevant to my problem.

It is common for fans to fail with age on these cars and people should check that first when something seems wrong temp wise. The Racing Beat screen definitely will not cause that.

138 is pretty low I'd say, I'm used to 205 in the summer (TX) and that's when I'm driving and getting air to the radiator. I never had it running and sitting there for 10 minutes to know how it would affect the temperature, but I'm sure it would go up a lot.

A little history and a little more detail will be helpful. How many miles are on the car? Has it overheated before. Was the fan mod installed because it was running hot? Did you mean that it is getting to 238F? What radiator are you running?

There are 167k miles on the car. It has gotten past the halfway mark many times before, never to the point where it dies or anything. There are no leaks anywhere internally or externally. As per the dealer. Compression is excellent as per the dealer. I bought the kit because its summertime and I want both fans running at full speed whenever i am stopped or going slow. I have already replaced the motor on the passenger side fan. And I can definitely hear the noisy drivers side fan.
This is a question that is driving me nuts nobody can legibly seem to answer.
There are 2 fans. Which one does what? Pushes or Pulls? I know the one with less blades pulls fresh air into the engine bay. The other one on the passenger side ive really never figured out, the air around it seems to be moving but I cannot tell if its working right.
Some rx8 owners tell me that both fans operate in the same direction and both pull fresh air into the engine bay. Others have told me they work opposite and circulate the air around the engine bay. Which one is true?

When the dummy gauges moves the engine is already running way too hot. Multiple overheats aren't a good sign... rather than buying band-aids i'd spend some time sorting the causes out.

I aggree, 220 and above is WAY too hot. The last time I had this problem i did not have a ton of money so my dealer tightened the terminals on the cooling fan connector so I diddnt have to pay 900 for a new wiring harness. last year even in 95 degree weather my temp never went over 200 at any time. I think I might just buy 2 new motors for a series 2 rx8, and a new shroud and pray that it fits without any hard modifications to the bolts or anything. Other posts say the new motors are a lot stronger than the previous years.
Then again, I might buy 2 fan shrouds and put 1 in the engine bay where its suppose to be and mount another behind my racing beat screen, wire all the fans together and call it a day. Can care less about the extra noise but I have to figure out a way to hook 2 cooling fans into 1 circuit without the potential of overloading it. Knowing mazda, they prob only made the wires barely big enough to handle just 1 fan without blowing a fuse.

^ I'm in the same boat as you. I think my fan motors are slowly dieing. Last year I never saw over 195, this year I can watch it creep up to the 205 range. Which is the point where I turn the ac off and the temps will go back down to 183-187.
This is with the same fan kit you are running. I now use a AP to adjust the turn on temps myself, but it's not helping.

Come to find out, my water jacket seal is expelling air from the internal engine into the cooling system, then when I shut the car off, guess where all that excess pressure goes? Thats right folks, back into the engine. That was one of the big problems that has been fixed. Now only when my ac is on the car will still go halfway to the red mark on the gauge, then goes back to the middle. I installed the mizu cooling fans and shroud too. Does anyone have a step by step with pics on how to replace the thermostat? I midaswell get the waterpump replaced while that area is being taken apart eh? If that does not solve the overheating problem, im parting it out. This is my daily driver car so its really putting a damper on work and my personal life. Anyone know how to put a standard engine in these cars? My view on these cars, the cars themselves are nice, the engines on the otherhand, unreliable pieces of sh**.
