255/40R18 Toyo T1R
For anyone shopping for new street shoes, I thought I would post a few pics / comments on my recent purchase.
I decided to try this tire size for a few reasons:
Here are a few pictures of the 255/40 T1R's vs. my 275/35 RT615's (both on 18x9.5 RPF1's). I think they fit pretty square on the wheels, although they are a little stretched compared to the 275's.
I've only had them mounted for a few days, but so far I'm pleased with the performance of the Toyo's.
I decided to try this tire size for a few reasons:
- Slightly taller than the 275/35 (25.9" vs. 25.6")
- Slightly less expensive than the 275/35
- Slightly less likely to hydroplane than a 275/35
- Slightly wider than the 245/40 (to hopefully fill out the wheels a bit better)

I'm going to keep the Falkens for autocross, but I was wearing them out too quickly driving on them every day.
As far as grip, the Toyo's are plenty for the street (in my opinion). Obviously, the ultimate grip is probably a bit lower, but I don't drive at 10/10ths on the way to work in the morning, so it's no big deal.
I'm not sure about ride comfort, because I'm running them at a higher pressure than the Falkens. I'll probably have a better opinion after the weekend.

Ride comfort is improved with the T1-R, but you do lose some responsiveness on turn-in.
This when I had the T1-R and the Azenis RT-215s back on my Miata.

Weight:
According to Toyo, the 275/35's are 27 lbs, while the 255/40's are 26 lbs. Both of which are lighter than the RT615's, which Falken rates at 28.6 lbs each.
Road Noise:
I can't hear the tires over the exhaust, but that's not really a good judge of how loud they are.
Sidewall Stiffness:
I can tell you that tire pressure has a profound influence on ride comfort. I am down to 32.5 psi now, and it's a big improvement over the 35 psi I was running a few days ago. Still, I suspect the sidewalls are probably a bit softter than the Falkens.
Thanks,
Dave
