aftermarket lugnuts

does anyone know if aftermarket lug nuts can be used with oem rims?
I have read that because of the tapered edge that they cannot be used, is this correct? and if so are there any that can be used?

Considering the amount of different aftermarket lugnuts available i'd say "it depends".

Yes they can (but not any old lugs). I recommend McGard Spline's. http://www.good-win-racing.com/Mazda.../21-1058c.html

I use them, as do many others, on both stock and aftermarket.

Not only will they fit your stock rims AOK, they're best for upscale aftermarket rims since they are narrower/deeper socket and the seat doesn't grind against the rim. They're also effectively wheel locks.

I, too, have the Spline Drive lugnuts. I strongly recommend them. Was impressed to see the rotating seat. Only downside (if you consider it that) is that you cannot use an impact wrench to put them on or take them off. Get yourself a decent torque wrench.

^ Agreed. I'd never use an impact wrench on any rims I cared about, and you really need a torque wrench anyway to ensure the current TSB cited 108 Ft Lbs. Harbor Freight has a very nice relatively low cost ol' school click type which I prefer over dial.

I still use the 87lbs.-ft. torque setting with no issue. I worry about the integrity of the lug studs over time at the current TSB torque setting.
