Attempt at making a TPMS fooler

Anyone care to guess what this is that I am making? Care to wager if it will work or not? I will do a DIY if it does work.

I'm guessing you got new wheels and didn't want to put the TPMS in them for the reason of balance and etc.. So you've made this tube in which you will fill up with air to simulate the pressure in your tires in hope of tricking the computer in to thinking your sensors are in. (My bet is it will work ) hope i'm right

I'm guessing you making a pipe that will hold 32psi in order to fool the TPMS system.

Well looking over some older threads like this https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/disabling-tpms-18784/ I am lead to believe the TPMS system gathers more than just .PSI data. So filling that tube to 32 lbs will not fool the TPMS system. BUT adding air to that tube might be enough to turn the TPMS sensors on and you could then scan what radio frequency they transmit on? That information would be needed to make a TPMS ‘fooler’

While the TPMS sensors transmit or can transmit more than just pressure data, I was under the impression that the RX8 TPMS system just uses the pressure info. We will see though. Unfortunately, I dont have a RF scanner. Currently chasing down leaks. PITA.

Well, the house lost. (assuming I reset the system correctly) I finally got all the leaks sealed, but the blinky light came back on. What that means is that the sensors are triggered by the centrifugal force of spinning or that they send that signal to the TPMS receiver. Next would be to dig in to the sensor to see if you could fool it to send the correct signal.

I will say this. I think that the TMPS responds differently to advancing number of drive cycles. When I first replaced the wheels, the light would come on after, say, 20 min. Eventually it would beep at me and come on sooner. The very last time before trying my fooler the light came on immediately. Dont know what that means.

Yes, to save battery life they are activated by tire rotation. This is the second year of my use of winter tires without TPMS and yes at first it takes 15-20 minutes for the warning light to come on. The longer you ‘ignore’ this light the faster the light will come on, I just cover the light and never see it.

I am going out an buying some flat black (non-glossy) stickers right now.

Any more ideas on this would be appretiated. After I extract my sensors, I would be happy to donate them to the cause as a test bed.

Could a mod please retitle this thread to better indicate what it is? Thank you!

Before you open them up finding someone that could try and get the RF would be better I think.

But if the rotation of the wheels turns them on, wouldn't it just be better to scan a stock car in motion or just resently stopped after a short drive? If mine arnt on, you wont get a signal? BTW do you have a scanner?

That type of work is beyond me, but if you had an exercise bike around you could attach one TPMS to the wheel while someone pedals? Putting the TPMS onto something that spins around shouldn’t be too hard.

Why didn't you just epoxy them to the inside of the rim before you mounted the tire. I'm sure that would work.

That seems like a simple fix, just wedge something in there.

I dont want them on my rims. They are not worthy. But I also dont want that damned blinky light either.

So they have to be wedged and then under pressure? Do you have more info? circuit discriptions? rf frequencies?

If I get around to dremeling them out of there this weekend, I will do exactly as you say. Basically start a careful archeological dig into one of the sensors. They are expoxy filled and sealed (There is a name for this but I am blanking on it right now) I just have to carefully remove that sealant (which is very difficult. it tried it once on another unrelated system some years ago and ruined the circuit board.) I will post pics. Your help is much appretiated.

it won't work, i've already tried this. the TPMS sensors also send out wheel speed information. if the car is in motion and doesn't detect wheels speed from the sensors, it'll still set off the light.
