Balancing wheels, and shaved tires.

Yesterday, I was attempting to balance a set of wheels wearing some new tires which had been shaved. I was having a lot of difficulty. I have never balanced a wheel with a shaved tires before, so I am assuming the trouble is an inconsitency in the shaving. I have never had to add more than 3/4 grams to a wheel before, but it was asking for 4-5 grams total on some wheels.

Is this fairly normal for a shaved tire? or are they poorly shaved?

I have seen some real bad shave jobs, ao I am sure you are on the right track. Is this for road course or autox? I have not balanced an autoX tire in 10 years, at the speeds we run I have not found it to be an issue. Also the first time you spin or do somthing stupid the tread will become uneven and your balance will be off.

They're for road course use, and not my use, so I'd like to make sure they at least start balanced. I just thought it was odd how much weight was needed.

For road course I would balance them for sure. Again I think you are right about the shave being the reason they need a lot of weight. However a good shop would rotate the tire on the wheel 180 and try again.

Well, I took one wheel and rotated the tire 90 degrees, then checked the balance. I did this 3 times yesterday, and it made no significant difference in the balancing.

I think we're right, after talking to some people, it's just a shitty shaving job. I've been told with a good shave job you can still expect to use upto 2-2.5 grams to balance.
