brake rotor etching

Hey everyone,

I just noticed something on my left rear brake rotor and was wondering if this is considered normal. There is a cross hatch pattern going all the way around the rotor around where the pad would contact it. I checked all the other rotors and did not notice it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

have you had your rotors turned recently? sounds like the lathing may have been a little rough on that rotor. Its best to have the rotors sanded smooth after lathing because the crosshatch pattern may cause excess squeal and possibly reduce pad life.

I know this is an older thread (Didn't want Mugatu yelling at me about searching ), but I just found the same thing on my '05 MT (~6k miles). The drivers side rear rotor still has what I think are the original machining marks on the rotor (cross-hatching). No other rotor has these marks. Was there any resolution to your issue? Is this something I should visit the dealer for, or is it as simple as bleeding that line?

And just for the folks who ask:
Newest flash (as far as I know)
Only dino oil
beep twice a day
Royal Purple trans and diff fluid go in this weekend
18+mpg

Well done. That is funny. Welcome to the forum.
But don't forget -- use a clay bar, get full Zaino product line, clear corners, Stealth LEDs all around, new intake, canzoomer upgraded to full emanage functionality...

By the way, I have no idea about the cross-hatching issue either of you have described.

My racingbrake slotted rotors still have some of the factory cross-hatching left on the outer perimeter. So it's nothing bad, they just haven't fully broken in yet.

thanks for the replies. I'm not really concerned about the cross-hatch itself, it's the fact that only one rotor still has this pattern after 6k miles and none of the other rotors (espically the other rear) have the pattern left.

again, you might want to bleed that caliper. If it happens to have a bit of air then it may not be actuating as much as the other. The front brakes do the majority of the braking so it wouldn't take much with the lesser rear brake force for one not to be working as much. The other thing is the caliper may need to be pulled and have the slide points greased up, it potentially could be hanging up and not actuating fully in that manner too.

All you can do is check the obvious stuff, outside of that ...

Hmmm...I wonder if this same thing is causing the squealing I am hearing from the same corner (driver's rear?). if the caliper is not clamping as hard as it should be, and it's only 'wiping' the rotor upon brake application, it could possibly be vibrating enough to cause the squeal.
