Bugger the spare tire, I want my trunk back

Bugger the spare tire, I want my trunk back
My original title for this was "Bugger the spare tyre, I want my boot back" but then I realised nobody would know what I was on about.
I have an RX8 with the enormous spare tire kit in it, and really all I want is the "get you home" spare-tire-in-a-can-thing. My question is - can I just remove this whole preposterous spare tire assembly and buy the can thing? Is there anything that happened at the factory to stop that being the case?
Any help appreciated - if it looks like I can do this, I'll make another post offering to swap the stuff...

pugwonk - are you still covered by Mazda road-side assistance? If you get a flat will they send a truck for free?
I carried the spare tire for a year and really begrudged the space it took and how it crowded the opening and blocked the light. Then it rattle loose and fell at a time when it was not convenient to rehang it so I just bunged it in the house figuring to rehang it later.
Well, it was so nice not having it that I've left it out ever since. I'd put it back in there for a long road trip, but for back-and-forth to work or errands around town it's an acceptable risk to me to go without it.
Regarding the fix-a-flat spray can - some tire (tyre) shops hate working on wheels with the goop in them. Some shops will refuse. If you can sort out a tow that might be the best solution.

I took my spare tire out after a year and it's amazing how much more room there is now! (even WITH 2 subwoofers back there)
As for the fix-a-flat spray... I'd say stay away from that. If you've got TPMS, it'll clog up the sensors and like CBD mentioned, tire shops hate the stuff.
If you ever get a flat, you can use your Emergency Roadside Kit to put some air back in it quickly while you get to a safe spot (there's a little air compressor in there) and then call for a free tow.

not to kick a dead horse, but i just removed my spare tire kit as well (easiest mod ever if you have one arm), and love the added space and yes, the fact that it no longer blocks the opening. I just moved in to a college apt in one trip with the 8 and had extra room.

Many thanks for the replies - you've helped me make my decision. I'll just yank the thing out and run the risk.
Even just leaving the tyre lying on the floor of the trunk is a better solution than having this giant climbing frame using half your trunk...

pugwonk - you're right, I swear the tire takes up 50% less space laying in the bottom of the trunk than hanging at the top blocking half the opening.

One of the local guys gave me the spare tire setup from his car after working on his car.
Can someone explain or take a picture of where the flat metal pieces go (with two holes in them, 4 total).
The mounting bar acts as a rear strutbar for those that weren't aware.

Thanks New Yorker.
Looks like there should be instructions in his glove box for the spare tire.
Was surprised that Rosenthal didn't have it posted in his archive of instructions though.
Also couldn't find it in the shop manual or here on RX8club.
