Cheap tire recommendations?

great,
at least you did it right. i am running the spts in the stock size at 36 psi i notice just a slight loss of turn in.
other than that they are better than the stock bridgestone in every way....
why would you buy tires (kumhos less expensive) then change them in two weeks???? if the tire dealer made the deal that is great...
good luck with the bfgs.

To save a few bucks on the single most important aspect of your vehicle is crazy. There is a reason those tires cost $94 bucks... and I'm not going to be the one to find out what that reason is.

Kumho is what I've run for the last year. My Potenzas gave up the ghost after about 18k miles. The 245 40/18 Kumho's have good grip and a great price. Check reviews on them and other tires at www.tirerack.com

Kumho!
Ecsta SPTs. I drive just as "spirited" as I did with the bridgestones and they are on pace to last at least 30,000 miles. I am sure there are cheaper tires out there, but then we are talking about sacrificing performance.

Wow... some of you seem pretty bitter in your defence of Kumho tires. You must be trying to justify your decision to install cheap tires. Frankly, I can't think of any other reason why you would care. I never said they were bad tires, I just said there are better tires available on the market, and I'll be using those other ones...
Have you ever considered how a $94 tire is manufactured vs a $250 tire? I can assure you that much more time and effort is involved in developing the technology, and manufacturing the $250 tire. This does not mean the $94 tire is crap, but it does mean the $250 one is on the leading edge of what is available on the market. If you choose a tire in between these price ranges, you are likely getting value in that mid-range also. If you plan to debate this point, please feel free to post...

So what is the difference SPECIFICALLY between the manufacturing of the Korean ($94) tire or the Japanese ($250) tire? I would love to hear your inside information.
*sits and waits*
If your going to just say there is a manufacturing difference only because the price is so different than you seriously need to go back to the 3rd grade.

A lot more than R&D goes into the cost of a tire. How much does labor cost in Korea vs. Japan vs. somewhere else? How much do raw materials cost? Land for manufacturing plants? How much does Kumho pay for advertising vs. Yok and Dunlop? I don't know the answer, but you can't blindly assume one product is better than another just due to price. Where are all the stories of kumho tires failing and otherwise sucking if the $250 tires are so much better?
Ask an autocrosser what the dominant DOT race tire is right now. Kumho. Which is faster yet actually cheaper and lasts longer than it's closest competition (Hoosier, which is purely a race tire company). Then think some more about Kumho's ability to engineer and build a good tire.
Not saying kumho is the only way to go for everyone, but when you characterize stuff as "crap," you might expect some backlash.

"Bitter" ? --- get off your high horse. The only 'bitter' comment was the "Ignorant" one to a you calling us "crazy" for buying a well rated but less expensive tire.
I do not need to justify anything to YOU - but if want to give my opinion about a product I have purchased I will - period. Perhaps you have a need to justify your purchase.

I'm getting Kumho SPT's for my next tire. They may be cheap, but I've yet to hear anyone, anwwhere, say anthing bad about them.
I think companies that charge 250 per tire are sometimes more living off their name than how good they actually are. If I could get away with selling a tire for 250 instead of 100, I'd do it also. If Kumho could get away with this, they probably would too. But like most Korean manufacturers, they are starting at the bottom price-wise because of a lack of public acknowledgement. When the Japanese first came here, they had to be "cheap" also. Now we have Lexus and Acura and Infiniti...go figure.

Such IGNORANCE!!
Granted I love my '04 RX8 but in 2 short years it's seen the dealership 9 times due to either recalls or problems!!!! while my '04 Hyundai Santa Fe has seen the dealer NIL, ZERO, NADA, in the same number of years. Look at Consumer Reports this year and Hyundai is as good, if not better, as Mazda Quality.
So based on your "theory", a Mercedes CL must be better than a Mazda 3... yeah right...
My 2 cents,
Carlos
