If you search under flywheels you'll find all the info and argumentation you need to keep you busy for a few days. The matter of light flys has been discussed for about a year, now. I would say the bottom line is that all those who argue over the details have yet to install a light flywheel because once you drive a car with a light fly the details seem to matter much less. There are three or four companies whose customers seem to be very happy and that is what counts. I have an Indigo/SR 9.75 lb. fly and the thing is awesome.

17lb for stock flywheel.... that is 7 kg. What stock car have you got
Cortc have weighted his stock and it is 21.5lbs (inc counterweight)
https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...light=flywheel
MazdaSpeed is 14lbs which is about 6.4kg
Fujita Engineering is 5.5kg plus counterweight = similar to MS
I guess you will go for the RE Amemiya one right?

icic... cortc's scale must be wrong then
OK now the stock fly is 17 lbs.
If MS is 15.5 then it is not light enough.
Too bad in Japan I can only find MazdaSpeed and Fujita Racing has flywheels. And only MS has clutch and flywheel combo.
Fujita engineering is 5.3kg without counter balance.... so it will be roughly the same
The lighter is better of course, but the design to create the balance while spinning is also important. It is important to see where the weight is, cause it is in the spinning part, a slight change in weight create a hell of different.
I am coming from a cycling world, and when I swap my stock wheel on my bike to Mavic psyrium. I think that was only 300g (over a 1.4kg for both wheel). THat is such as HUGE different. Therefore the best mod for bicycle is a set of good wheel. Same as in cars. I think I have to research more about the weight of all available flywheels.
