Hey guys,

I'm looking for a set of coilovers that can handle track use but will mostly be street driven. So that being said I've kind of narrowed down my choices to either the Tein Basics or the Stance GR+'s, the stances are going to be at the upper end of my budget as I'm buying wheels and tires at the same time.

So what I really was wondering are these good choices, which of the two would you choose, will they need to be rebuilt after say 20k miles? are there any others I should be looking at ?

If your car is mostly DD and only sees the track a few times a year then you will be happy with both. The Stance will have more ride height adjustability... I've tracked on Stance and recommend them to people who are not competitive and are on a budget. Also Stance has great customer service if something goes wrong with the shocks.

^ @the pss9's, doesn't the shock rate on those change as you raise or lower them?

^I mean the Basics and the Megans are both what they are...Cheap. I was on Megans and tracked a few times on them...

Your pretty much choosing between crap...and crap....So pick which crap you would like, and buy it..

^$1500 is cheap for what those coilovers are. They are the BEST shocks for less than 1500, paired with some higher spring rates, and a revalve if you would like, they can be just as competitive as shocks costing twice as much.

lol well I'm not looking for crap that's for sure I want some coil overs that will be able to preform on the track just know that I'm not going to be on the track every weekend maybe like 4 or 5 times over the summer, I'm a college student and don't really have the time or cash flow to do that over the school year

so I should be leaning towards the stances or the bilsteins?

lol alright I'll be looking into the bilsteins then i found some for 1250, not a bad price at all.

One last question (until I think of another):

I'll be driving from Miami, FL to STL, MO at least three to four times on these coilovers, will they be comfortable or will they break my back, I dont mind a stiffer ride than stock I just don't want to feel every single little bump.

are you talking about preload on the springs, that would change since they don't have independent height adjustability. Tho i feel like that feature is mostly just a marketing gimmick. I feel like bilsteins on this forum are much overlooked because they're either not jdm or not a brand name coilover, or dont have as much features. but as i've said in other threads, for the money i think they're a bargain. They're easily re-valved if you want to upgrade and very expandable.

edit: wow, so much went on inbetween, i guess i took too long to reply lol, well like top gear said, bilsteins takes the cake

Very true. If you made a poll on this forum. Most of the people would vote that Tein, JIC, HKS, Stance, and KW are the best coilovers for the RX8...which is because most of them do not know of the actual good ones... Moton, JRZ, Ohlins, Dynamic, Sachs, and the upper end Koni 2812's.

*gasps* you mean, the expensive ones! I think KW is the most commonly sold, higher end coilover I've seen on this forum. Only you crazy racers use Ohlins and Dual-Valved Konis.

If i were you i'd get the Bilsteins but if you were dead set on being cheap and get the Tein Basics you wouldn't be extremely disappointed like you might be thinking. I originally bought Tein Basics for the sole purpose of being cheap. Now that i'm hitting the track on a regular basis they've proved to be a better performing coilover than i thought they would be. I've had experienced drivers and instructors drive my car and be driven in and they've all complemented me on how the car handles.

Just sayin. Get what you want. I definitely want to upgrade to something like KW Variant III's at some point but for the price i happen to think the Basics are a pretty decent coilover (for a basic coilover that is).

TopGear is telling it like it is. Might be a tough pill to swallow for some -- but the quality of the damping on the bilsteins rivals that of shocks costing 2-3 times the price. They are also a modular shock -- as you have extra funds in the future, you can easily (and cheaply) get them revalved to run more aggressive spring rates. You can also add remote reservoirs and other goodies down the road if you so desire.

Personally, rather than buy some 1K crap, I'd save for a few more months and get the $1,500 Bilsteins...

Havent picked em up yet I should be buying them at the end of this week when I get my paycheck I'll let you know and I dont quite recall Ill tell you where I end up buying them

Ok cool, I'm looking at going the same route as you and can't seem to find them for $1250, cheapest I found is $1467.

And BTW I'm not sure how much you've read up on these, but I am currently halfway through reading up on a whole thread on these (https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-wheels-tires-brakes-suspension-55/anyone-here-run-bilstein-pss9s-140733/) and I hear nothing but good things about them. Seems they are the best of the best for under $2000 and worth way more than that anyway. I don't think you'll be regretting buying these one bit. I think I'll be picking mine up in about two weeks, so keep me updated oh how everything goes for you.

Alright thanks for the heads up ryan Ill let you know as soon as i put the order in etc.. I just did a quick search and found em for 1200 just gotta make sure its for the right car
