First time rim buyer questions

I'm looking to change out my rims and I'm very new to modding cars in general.
Here are some questions I have:

  • Should I buy rims online or at a store?
  • How much does it take to have rims "installed", approx.?
  • What brand(s) should I stay away from?
  • Is there somewhere that sells the rims WITH the tires?
  • What is the RX8 Offset, I have a 2006 Shinka

Here are the rims I am looking at: http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/Wheel...=Sport+Package

Thanks in advance!

Personally I do not like those wheels. You can get package deals just about anywhere online. Stock wheels are 18x8 with +50 offset.

Most rims are bought online.

Installed? You just put them on your car, if you mean mounting them on the tire...shops will do that for you for pretty cheap...

People will tell you to stay away from ebay brands...But some have found some good durable wheels from ebay...

I bought my wheels with the tires already mounted and balanced..off of ebay. Some places such as tire rack you can buy tires and wheels...but i'm not sure if they will mount them for you, you'd have to find that out yourself.

The RX8 offset of +50mm.

Another thing, alot of people will find aftermarket rims they like and they are 18X7.5. Which they do not realize that they are only 7.5" wide, which is too small for the RX8. You should not go below 8" wide.

just google and google and google some more.

Look up "alignment" "offset" "camber"
http://www.1010tires.com/tech.asp has some great info.
As far as width, you can do 7.5 to 9.5 but should stick with 8.
You can do diameters 17-19"s, but should stick with 18 (best looks, 19" tires are $$)
offset is up to you, you wont find any +50mm aftermarket. Lots of +48mm and +45mm which is essentially the same.

Order wheels with tires, if you can do without TPMS, and learn to put them on your car yourself. Get a jack, a good torque wrench (craftman makes a great one), and some other things... learn how to change a wheel. Buying tools will cost around 100, but itll save you money cause most shops will charge 70 ish to mount, plus you know its done right, and you wont scratch your own rims, and you can save on the 50$ tire rotations the dealer will sell you.

I'm thinking I'll run with the 19"'s if I'm going to do this. And yes by "install" I meant mounting the tire to the rims. Thanks for all the information!

I've seen rims like those, and they are the best combo I've seen on red. I have dark gold on my car, and it looks great! but not as fabulous as black rims with a red lip.

There are several rims like this you can find.

May I make a suggestion? Inevitably, you'll discover the joy of wide tires, and large diameter sway bars. Looks AND performance.

May I suggest going with 9.5" or 10" wide wheels. 19 inch diamter are ok, but 18's are better and cheaper, mostly for ride comfort (You'll see, "enjoyment is not always performance") (PS: at 9.5 /10 You want an offset near 43 for precise fitment)

Also, as far as tires go, if you get a lot of rain check out Bridgestone potenza 960AS PolePositions they are top ranked for rain. They make my driving experience that much better here in British Columbia.

Hope you enjoy your new wheels!
