is this paint for the brake calipers or the discs, cuz right on the inside of my back 2 discs are freakin rusted and ive heard u can paint them. i went on amazon and found something called g2 brake CALIPER paint. isnt this the stuff that is applied to ur pads and not the discs? if so, what is the name of the stuff and where can it be found that allows u to paint ur rusted discs.

ive heard that the rust comes off after driving, this is not the case with me, rust is always there

 

You don't want to paint the pads or the discs. These are the friction surfaces and the paint will get in the way probably making your brakes fail. The paint is for the non-contact surfaces, like the part that holds the pads (the caliper), and the wheel hub.

Don't paint the discs!!!

 

Do you have to remove rust before painting, or can you paint over the rust. If you do have to remove the rust, HOW?

 

i think the part that i have rusted is the wheel hub, because the discs and the calipers are fine, except occasional squeaking, but the hub is covered in rust. yeah, how do u remove the rust? because it looks like it would be really hard to paint over that.

 

I took my rotors off, cleaned them with spray type brake cleaner. Then with a relatively soft nylon striping wheel attached to a cordless drill I removed any leftover rust from the NON CONTACT area of the rotors. I then masked the contact area with blue painters tape and painted the hubs with high temp brake spray- paint found at Auto Zone. G2 is what I used on the calipers but would also work on the hubs. Not sure if the G2 system comes with enough paint to do four hubs & calipers.

EDIT: You can paint the rotor hubs while on the car also with a similar method, you just have to be more carefull with prep & the painting.

 

Good procedure you used. I haven't done it to this car yet, but it's what I've done before (practiced on the wife's car, haha). I've seen a couple of threads say that two sets of paint is needed to do all four sets of both the calipers and hubs.

 

With my VR 8, I got 2 sets of G2, 1 red for calipers, 1 silver for hubs. I think 1 kit may have done it all if I'd wanted only 1 color, but may have been close.

It was easy to do the hubs on the car w/a brush just slowly turning the rotors by hand and holding the brush. I didn't have much rust to start. Used the cleaner supplied after a quick brushing. It's been a year or so now and they hold up well, I've knocked a couple red chips off the calipers taking off/putting on the wheels a number of times since.

The G2 paint is a two-part paint and it "...will begin to set 4-6 hrs after mixing.". At least 2 coats (I did 3) are required and there is a 15-minute wait time between coats. I decided that there might not be enough paint for 3 coats on the rotors and calipers and that I would be rushing to avoid the dreaded set time. I wanted to take my time and do a good job. If you prep the rotors and calipers in advance and paint them with 2 coats all in the same time cycle, I suppose you can do it with one kit. I wasn't quite that fast so I used 2 kits and took my time painting both items.

The key to a good paint job on the calipers (and rotors) is getting them very clean and free of rust and grease/oil. If you don't get them clean, the paint will start to chip off. I speak from personal experience.
