From gunmetal to Polish

From gunmetal to Polished finish rims
Well after we painted the rims gunmetal, the outcome was nice, but they started chipping like 2 weeks after, so we decided just to polish them, the only reason i dint do it in the beginig was because is to much of a long and harsh job. Today i got home and i decided to try it with one rim. started at 7 pm, took 40 minute break and finished at 11:30(thats for one rim) with no electric sander, ( note that is to late at night and i still have to polish compound it and polish, with the electric polisher, and its to loud so i have to wait till tomorrow morning, the neighboors will complain.
im posting a picture of wat it looks like now and ill post one of it finished tomorrow.
Yes in dead tired , and my fingers are killing me, but im pretty happy with the outcome of it. im hopping it gets better with the 2 steps to come.
I still dont know if I should spray a clear coat to protect it. I heard it looses the shinines, but on the other hand i dont want them rusting later on. any hints!!!
btw i erased the diy of painting rims it was unsucesfull

Aluminum alloy doesn't rust, but it does corrode - it forms a whitish powder on the surface. Bare aluminum is a bad idea, it should be clear-coated (Any factory polished wheel will have a clear coat on it). Duplicolor makes wheel coatings (aka special paint) for wheels, it's much tougher than regular paint, and they offer a clear coat as well as white, silver, and gray. Daniel, that would probably have prevented the chipping you experienced as well with the paint you used. The Duplicolor Clear wheel coating paint would be ideal to protect the polished wheel once you're finished polishing. (When I painted my Miata wheels (yellow centres and spokes), I used regular paint, then did a final coating with the clear Duplicolor wheel coating. 3 years later, no chips in the paint on the wheels.)

Ok guys thanks
i will clear coat them later on when they are all done.
p.s on a side note i used clear laqure for the paint but it would still chip with the design of the rims and sharp edges it had. We also have a lot of rocks on the highway which would cause them to chip.
