I swear we had another thread on this exact same topic recently...
I thought I had seen it too but I couldn't find it through the site or google, you gotta admit though, it's not a waste, lots of good info in here

Anyways, the way that you're asking this question implies that you haven't done much in the way of AutoX'ing or track days. If that's the case, Swoope has the right idea. Stick with the stock size or move down to 17's because you want to save money and weight. Just be aware that changing wheel size usually moves you around between classes when it comes to anything competitive (i.e. autocrossing).
yea, don't have much experience with autox, and I do plan on running the car at autox events and tracks. But I don't plan on doing it competitively therefore don't really care what class I'll end up in. I do have plenty of experience with performance driving however so I'm no stranger to any of this.

I will say that the 17x9 wheels with 255/40 tires makes for a smokin' fun street tire setup. You will feel the added acceleration & grip over stock, although to properly take advantage of the added grip potential you should add some roll stiffness to the car, both transitional (shocks) and steady state (bars/springs). Cheap and fast - hard to argue with that. Only problem is that if you have lowered the car, the added drop from the 17" setup can pose some ground clearance issues.
you hit the nail on the head that's exactly what I'm looking for. A killer street setup that can perform well at events. And I definately plan on doing the suspension together with it. I have different setups in mind for the different tire sizes. For the 255/40 on a 17x9.5 I'm most likely going to run the Eibach multi-pro r1 and hotchkis sways.

I've seen this covered in the competiton forum but it's mostly a daily driven setup. I want to go as wide as I can but without feeling like I lost any speed off the line. From my own research it seems that my line of thinking with the 255's is right on the money with the replies on here.
