HP Evo Lightning 18" Wheels
Definately the next addition I want to make to my 8. Ever since I saw them on the first page of the "post pictures of your aftermarket rims" thread I thought they were gorgeous. Weirdly everywhere I looked, I couldn't find the weight of the wheels. Anyone know off of the top of their head? Also, I saw these on wheelfire.com for just under $700 for the set shipped. Anywhere to get a better deal assuming I don't get lucky and run into any used ones?? IMO these are the prettiest wheels I have seen on a Titanium Gray 8.

HP's wheels are usually heavy, that's all I know.. As far as pricing, I really couldn't tell you that. Why you so worried about the weight of the wheels, I'd be more worried about how they look rather than the weight.

Hey Big Mike,
Here is the information I have gathered on the weights of "mesh" style wheels that look like the HP Lightning Evo 18". I have been looking at wheelfire and wheelmax.
HP Racing Lightning Evo - 25lbs (source telephone rep at Wheelfire)
Azul Speed Mesh - 23.5lbs - (soure telephone rep at wheelfire)
AZA - Z02 - 28lbs - (email response from Wheelmax)
Exel E22 - 24lbs (email response from wheelmax)
AZA Z110 - 24lbs (email response from wheelmax)
I wrote a letter of complaint to wheelmax yesterday because I submitted the inquiry 1 week ago and got no response. The guy there sympathized with me and claims to have physically gone into the warehouse and put each of the 3 wheels on the scale. When I called into wheelmax 1 week ago and got a female rep, she said the AZA Z02 were 22lbs. Needless to say, I would have been pretty steamed if I ordered a set of rims expecting them to be 22lbs and recieved 28lbs. The contact at wheelmax is Ennio Mannella. He was very helpful - repsonding to my emails within minutes.
Bottom line is I too love this style wheel on the 8, but I have yet to find a rim that is lighter than stock and is in the price range of the HP Racing Evo. I will probably settle for a 25lb rim and hope I don't notice the difference. With a tight budget I cannot justify paying more than double for some Volks or BBS.
I hope this helps.

You may look up Enkei's Racing Series RPM2. These are a strong wheel and weigh between 19 & 21 pounds for a 18", depending on the wheel with. This is a couple of pound less than the OEM wheels. They can be found for about $250 per wheel. For a 17" wheel, figure it's 2 pounds lighter and $50 cheaper.

Those are pretty wheels though. And for under $700 new and shipped you can't beat it with a stick. As long as they won't be bringing my 0-60 down .5 seconds or something crazy like that I'm definately springing for them.

Ok well I called wheelfire today to ask about the weight of the 18" HP Evo Lightnings. I got a quote of 23 lbs. When Ngill33 called he got an answer of 25 lbs. Can anyone who owns these wheels confirm which is correct?

I came across a thread from June 07 where you mentioned having trouble with the TPMS on one wheel, causing it to leak. Is that still an issue? Big Mike and I are both looking to order these rims and I don't want any surprises.
Secondly, at only 3lbs heavier than stock, do you notice any issues with decreased performance? I would assume it would be minimal.
Third (sorry), how are they physically holding up? Any quality issues? I dumped alot of $ (for me) into chrome rims for my previous car, and the rims started pitting in the 1st year (never even saw salt) and the little studs around the perimeter started popping out. The price is right on the HP's but I want to make sure that is not due to lower quality.
Thanks

Hey Mazurfer,

Okay, here's the deal. I do want to direct you to a post in another thread and it may be the one you mentioned, but here it is:
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-wheels-tires-brakes-suspension-55/hp-lightning-wheels-118159/
Anyway....yes I was having an issue when I put the HP Evo Lightning Hyper-Darks on my car. I have since come to find out that this doesn't really have to be the HP rims, because people have seen this issue with other rims and even with stock rims.
Having said that........Mazda also changed the grommet on the rim, so if you have an 06 or newer, you probably have the improved grommet and may not have any issue at all.
My issue on my 05 was that one of the four had a leak when I moved the TPMS's over from my stock rims to the HP's. That leak was eventually was traced to the sealing grommet on the TPMS leaking. I tried another TPMS(old grommet design) and even another rim(another HP) and got the same result....a slow to medium leak.
I ended up sliding on another grommet(see that post again) on the one Rim/TPMS that was leaking. This added grommet was placed on the valve stem after it went through the rim but before putting the long valve stem nut(that holds the TPMS to the rim). So essentially had an inner and an outer grommet. As you will read in that post, I was pretty sure it would show up eventually on one of the others. Of course I procrastinated and didn't do anything about the others and they were fine for well over a year or so. This Winter(during a real cold snap down here), another decided it was going to leak.........as I figured it might eventually. I then went and put the extra grommet on all the remaining three and haven't lost any pressure in any tire since.....even through a couple of more cold snaps.
Secondly, at only 3lbs heavier than stock, do you notice any issues with decreased performance? I would assume it would be minimal.
None.......and people say to me. Hey, those are the perfect rims for that car. I hear that really about once a month..........which doesn't sound like a lot except it's just from random people stopping in the street to tell me that while I'm out there working or cleaning the car.
I think the FEDEX and the UPS guy both want to steal my ride!

Wow! Um....certainly no studs have popped out and they have held up really good so far. No quality issues and I am very happy with them. I live one block from the beach in Florida(under the most salty conditions just about anywhere) and while she is garage kept, she is outside all day at work.
I have seen absolutely no pitting at all, but know that I do keep them clean, and it's not unusual for me to wipe the down about three times a week.
I know you really won't be able to see them much as I wasn't shooting pics of the rims, but these shots were taken last weekend and lighting was kinda bad. The rims have been on the car since March 07. (See attached)
Let me know if any further questions.
Dave
Thanks

It asks me for a password and I don't have access. There is nothing wrong with this thread and I think it has some good info and pics in it. It will also show you exactly what my issue and resolution was.
