Improved ride

Just put on my snow tires here in Northern NJ. Using Pirelli 240 Snowsport. No snow to test them on yet, BUT -- the ride quality is dramatically improved as is the road noise.

Didn't really realize how noisy the OEM tires were until now. Also, my RX-8 no longer sounds like a can of loose screws on these rough NJ roads.

Bottom line is the enjoyment level of my car just increaed dramatically...

Come Spring, I'll be buying a new set of summer tires that are a little more forgiving. OEMs were fine on SoCal roads (where I bought the car) but not here.

Anyone have any recommendations?

I have the Pirelli 240 Snowsports on my 8. I live just a few minutes from you viggen. I had put my tires on before the last snow we had here. My road had about 3in on it and I didn't have any problems on the snow or slush that came once it started melting.

Fair Dinkum, you blokes need to move to another country . Here, for example. The weather is great, the beaches are terrific, the girls are friendly, snow is still available if you want to climb a mountain to find it...... :p

Hmmmm, I assume you mean daytime temps 'cos nearly everywhere would drop below 15deg C at night during winter. I suppose the area that would come closest to meeting that criteria would be the central coast of New South Wales, south of Sydney. They'd have days hotter than 38deg occasionally, but the climate would be generally gorgeous all year round. Not to humid, not too cold, good beaches, close to the major cities.......

I also have the Pirelli 240. They ride better and handle well on dry pavement. Could they be used year round or would they wear too fast?

You know, I looked all over the tires for the treadwear rating, but I couldn't find it. I have heard some people using them year round with no problems. If you don't take the corners like you're on a track, tires generally last a long time.

I think the OEM tires sucked - I used Goodyear Eagle F1 summer tires which were best summer tires I have ever owned both for dry and wet driving. I am using 245 X 40 X 18's on original rims. Have since gotten Axis Super Mesh rims.

13k miles, worn even. Every day I drive the car on the snows, I enjoy it even more. I believe I will get a set of Eagle F1 summer tires in the spring -- just read a great comparison review in Autocar, good balance of performance, ride quality and noise control...
