Inconsistent Brake Response

I’ve noticed this phenomenon several times, and I’m wondering if anybody else has noticed it.

The scenario is as follows. I’m driving at a more-ore-less constant speed, in a straight line, but at high revs (say, 50 mph in second gear). I’m not accelerating or decelerating. Now, for whatever reason, I decide I need to brake quickly. So, I move my right foot quickly off the throttle and onto the brake pedal, expecting to be met with the RX-8’s responsive brake system. Instead, I am met with significantly less retardation force than I expect – I really need to bear down on the pedal more than expected. Shouldn’t there be enough vacuum under these circumstances to ensure full braking force?

So, I do what comes naturally, and push harder. What happens here is even more disconcerting – The brake pedal suddenly gives a bit, and I feel like it goes through a detent of some kind – I literally feel this detent in the pedal (I swear I can hear it as well, but that’s probably my imagination). Once through the detent or step the pedal firms up again and the brakes start working as expected.

Has anybody else experienced this? If this is common I will be disappointed. If not, I will be in for service.

George
