Lets talk winters! Here's a few I found
Looks like there isn't much choice around, so I think I have it down to 3 tires.
225/55/17
Blizzak WS50 Q Rated
Dunlop Sport M2 H rated
Dunlop Graphite DS-1 Q Rated
Also, if I got Blizzak I might as well got 215/55/17 as they are the only tire available at that size (well good/inexpensive tire that is).
Now I've read the Q rated isn't that best for dry handling, but then a few people told me they had no issues.
The Graphites are $70 cheaper PER tire! Than the M2's and about $40 cheaper than the Blizzaks.
I'll probably go 215 on the blizzaks if I decide that way.
I've sourced some rims (they looks similar to the stock rims). They are only $166 cdn each.

What would you get the H or Q rated? Bare in mind I do not have DSC or TSC and I won't be racing, I drive slowly up 1 road to work and home, mostly slush with some snow on my small street.

Wing,
Those are nice wheels for the money. You might also want to consider the 18" version with Blizzak LM-22 tires. They are not as good in deep snow but will provide more satisfying handling in the winter on days when the roads are clear.
A friend has them on his 540, and they sound much better than the Pirelli P210 SnowSports I had (mine were 55 series, his 45).
The Blizzaks are $281 CDN each. (V rated)TireTrends Blizzak LM-22

I think that the size which would match the current 225/45/R18 would be 215/55/R17, if you are going for 17" rims.

funksoulbrother, I think md is going with 18's but if you want to get together for 17's I'm in.
I found out that TalonTire in Montreal has Yokohama AVS901's for $198 a tire as well.
I do realize that 215/55/17 is a better fit than 225/55/17 but the problem is ONLY the blizzaks are available at that size. I don't think a Q rated tire will work. The H rated tires are 225. I used the miata calculator and it's not really that much different, says 60mph you will be going 61.3mph. So no big deal.
I'm going to call TalonTire today.

Maybe we can get someone in Montreal to head over to Talon Tire and see if fitting will be an issue.
I'd go down on the weekend but they are only open 8:30 - 5:30 M-F!
The 18" tires are almost $300 each! The 17" tires I'm looking at are below $200. $400 savings, plus rims at 18" are big bucks.
17" it will be for me. Unfortunately 215/55/17 is only around in the Q rated, so I'll have to go 225. Oh there is one H rated Pirelli at $230 that's not too bad.

I posted the following tonight in the Canada forum winter tire group buy thread, but wanted to toss it in here since the 17" size was being discussed...
I'd never consider the Blizzak WS-50 on a car with any sporting pretensions - on any sort of dry pavement or even hard-pack snow, the handling will turn to sloppy mush and you will hate it. The other tires in that size (Pilot Alpin NG or Pirelli W210) will have decent handling (ie infinitely better than the WS-50) and 90% of the snow/ice capability of those WS-50s.
Ideally, I'd like to try the Goodyear GW3 or Yoko AVS Winter V901, but neither has a reasonable 17" size. We need to find a 16" light alloy wheel that will clear the brakes!!!
Regards,
Gordon
16" alloy wheel - 5x114.3 pattern, 42 to 50mm offset, under 16 lbs weight, must clear front brake caliper.
If it clears front calipers, is under 16 lbs, and around 45mm offset, then tire choices:
1st 16" size choice: 215/60-16,
Acceptable tire choices in that size:
Goodyear Eagle UltraGrip GW3
Michelin Pilot Alpin Next Generation
Pirelli Winter210 SnowSport
2nd 16" size choice: 205/60-16,
Acceptable tire choices in that size:
Goodyear Eagle UltraGrip GW3
Michelin Pilot Alpin Next Generation
Pirelli Winter210 SnowSport
3rd 16" size choice: 225/55-16
Acceptable tire choices in that size:
Blizzak LM-22
Goodyear Eagle UltraGrip GW3
Michelin Pilot Alpin Next Generation
Pirelli Winter210 SnowSport
Toyo Garit HT
Toyo Snowprox S950
Yokohama AVS Winter V901
If a light 16" alloy rim can't be found that clears the front brakes, then
2nd wheel choice: 17x7" alloy 5x114.3, 42 to 50mm offset, under 17 lbs, must clear front brake caliper.
Acceptable 17" tire size: 215/55-17
Acceptable 17" winter tire choices in that size:
Michelin Pilot Alpin Next Generation
Pirelli Winter210 SnowSport
The Goodyear GW3, Michelin Pilot Alpin NG, and Yoko AVS Winter V901, are all new to the Canadian market this year. The GW3 came out tops in German winter tire tests last year, and the other two are very promising.
