Megan Coilovers just in!

My coilovers from megan racing just arrived, and I can't wait to get them on. Before I do, though, I was hoping someone would have recommendations for what settings to start out with... I've read that 10/14 is nice but are there any other settings people are using... I plan to use the car more for auto-x a few times a semester and with a few trips to the drag strip a little less often.

you really can't go by what other people say. start from the softest and adjust accordingly.

just test out diff. settings yourself. that's the point of adjustability...

i know, but i was hoping for a starting point. or at least an method others have used to find the right setting for them so that I'm not just running in blindly, spending much more time when there was a better method.

depending on your suspension setup, and how you like your balance, it will be hard to tell what settings to put.

hmmmm... that should make things interesting. I only need to corner balance the first time, right? Adjusting the dampers won't affect the car balance afterwards, will it? as long as I don't touch the ride height? Or will I have to rebalance every time I change the damper settings?

The way I see it is that if you add up the cost for shocks, springs, and struts, then the coilovers are less expensive. From everything I've looked at, coilovers will do just as well if not better as any combination of the others you'll find at a comparable price, but you get the luxury of adjust ability and the ability to corner balance. Seems well worth it to me if one plans to be doing any auto crossing.

If 10/14 means 10 in the front and 14 in the rear you need to do some serious research about suspension settings. A "general rule" is the stiffer you go in the rear the less traction you will get when accelerating. 10/14 would probably make the car pretty loose under acceleration. Post on here though how those coilovers hold up I was thinking about getting a set.

Coilovers are better, but not less expensive. My Koni shocks were $575 shipped and my Sprint springs $210, making them only $785 for the complete set. Plus they're adjustable and have a lifetime warranty, and suit my needs better. Why did you say Shocks AND struts?

As for adjusting your Megans, start with the stiffest settings and works your down until you get to something comfortable.

I meant shocks and sways, sorry; wasn't paying attention.

Regarding the 10/14, thats just what rx8power had said worked for him in another post I'd read, and it was the only setting I'd seen in the forums. On the ACT/SAT I always started guesswork from a ballpark figure... I was hoping to do the same with these and save a little time so that I don't have to try all 900+ possibilities (though I realize common sense would rule out most of those, but you get the point I hope). 10 is actually stiffer than 14, though, so the rear would still be a little loose and hopefully won't slow down the acceleration.

I intend to keep everyone up to date after installing them. I've seen one good review on the forums and hope to give another (but the last will be hard to top). Hopefully I will be able to add another perspective after taking it to the track.

...says the guy with the lambo doors

As far as a starting point I hope you didn't start your Konis at full stiff and work down. You know the last half turn isn't even usable right? You're supposed to start at full soft and go from there, most people typically go 1.25 to 1.75 full turns from full soft.

TeamRX8 is a nationally-ranked SCCA autocross driver... are you? Show us how your car weighs less than 2800 lbs, or can beat up STIs on the track, then we'll pay more attention to YOUR pointless opinion...

No need to ride his nutz. Yes he might be ranked and all the good things, but the point was a guy asked a question and got a crazy answer that wasnt worth the post.

And reducing weight on your car and beating STIs dont mean people are supposed to bow down and listen to your every word. I have done both those tasks in a shitty SRT-4, and I dont expect anyone to bow down to what I have to say...

Meh. The SCCA licensed me to race cars, so I wouldn't hold them up in such high regard.

Humor everyone, humor.

Cheers.

see now that is sound advice. lol problem is he will get the info and be lost at what it means. some guy will tell him where he gets it done and he will probably be as lost as when he took them in to be tested.

So what coilovers would you have me get instead? Or are you suggesting I replace shocks, sways, and springs? You pretend as though you are helping, giving the cryptic suggestion of returning them, and later suggesting that the spring rates are not as Megan states. I searched the RX8 forum and other car forums long before buying these and failed to find anyone complain about the Megans, other than the one person who installed them himself but later changed his mind after having another mechanic fix them up for him--after which he was just as impressed as all the others.
Even in other car forums people were impressed with Megan, so it would seem as though Megan is quite reliable and popular. Should you point me to a source with any sort of damnable evidence against Megan I will be quite willing to sell them before putting them on, but as of yet your one line responses do little for me but think your completely full of it and trying to pass it off as though you know more than you really do, like the student who seeks attention in class by commenting on everything he can, repeating stuff he's heard elsewhere, in the hopes that he will look brighter.

I just finished installing megan coilovers tonight. Im gonna set ride height and alignment tomorrow. From the short test drive I took I can say they are very stiff. But damn it feels great. I dont even think ill need to upgrade sway bars. there is almost now roll. and when you push down on your bumper it almost feels solid. Ill fill you in and prob write a review after i tune them.
