Unhappy Need advice: Leaning & alignment

Hi everybody.

Pardon my n00bness, I've only had my 8 for less than a year and I'm trying to get more experienced owners opinions on what I should do so I don't keep throwing $ away.

I have an '05 6spd that seems to be noticeably leaning on the drivers rear side. I've been having issues w/ alignment for a while and I started noticing that I am leaning slightly in the seat while driving (even though my stealership tells me I'm crazy). At speed, the car feels like it's tracking slightly dog-legged. The wheel doesn't pull to any side, but by default it sits just a bit off to the left.

Today I stood behind the car on a level driveway and took a good look at it. Just by eyeballing it I could notice that the left rear is clearly sagged when compared to the right and the right rear wheel looks more cambered that the left. I haven't taken measurements yet. The front end looks OK.

So alignments aren't solving the problem. Obviously something is worn / broken. I love this car but I'm not knowledgeable enough to diagnose the problem myself and figure out what needs to be looked at / replaced. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Do you have aftermarket springs or shocks? Maybe the shocks or springs or combo of both are shot. Take those measurements.

Oh and take it to a different shop. Your dealership sounds like they are idiots, as most are.

Everything is stock, no aftermarket springs or shocks. The car has 28K miles now and is still under warrantee so I was hoping I could get the issue resolved gratis but that looks less and less likely as time goes on.

Do springs / shocks typically wear out this fast for us?

I don't think so. They should last longer than 28k.

I think I would get a second opinion at another shop though. Something screwy is going on there.

Take a pic of the car from behind and close ups of the springs/shocks - left and right - and post them. That might help troubleshoot. Double check your tire pressure to make sure that you're even on both sides.

Go back to the dealership and remember that they're working for you. Park your car on a flat surface, make sure your trunk is empty, and show them that the left rear side is low. Bring a level if you have one. Ask them to check your springs. Also ask around in your regional forum to see if people in Miami have recommendations for better dealerships at servicing your car. Driving an extra 15 or 20 minutes for better service is always worth it.

If it is an off alignment issue make sure they tell you what it is. If they do an alignment for you because that is what's causing the issue then make sure you get a computer printout of the alignment settings - before and after - so you can see what had to be done. If you haven't had your car aligned and its up to 30k you should do it anyway if this problem is the springs. Its almost definitely off.

Your springs should last longer than that but sometimes parts fail.

I have noticed plenty of times when the rear left was lower than the right. particularly during my coilover install. luckily i have coilovers to adjust it. happens to other people too.

concerning the camber, if the difference is within 1 degree it will probably be left alone. that is what is specified in the manual.

The best way to tell is to take it to a good alignment shop...the rack is perfectly level

Then you can measure the corners and check under the car with it loaded to see if anything looks wrong

Get them to write a note for the dealership if there is a problem

If it seems OK get it aligned to your specs...or stock if you want.

There is no excuse for differences in camber from side to side unless you are setting up that way for a reason
