need some advice

whatup guys, need some advice. Some unfrinedly guy busted my two rear tires. Dont worry he was found and taken care of. Anyways, my baby is sittin in the garage with two broken legs. And i have few few questions

1. My front tires have 13, 000 miles of spirited driving. I am not sure how to measure thread, but it still seems to have some. Would it be wise to change all 4 tires or just the back ones (Im a college student, and money is tight)

2. Would it matter if the two front tires and the two rear tires were different brands, would this hinder the cars handling and overall performance.

3. Can someone recommend an overall good tire, for a good price. Yeah i kno there are hundreds of factors to consider. I just want someone to recommend a good performance tire, preferably better than OEM's, for what would be considered a good price.

Thanks alot for your help,

You can get two new tires.

Generally speaking, it's frowned upon getting different brands, because if the performance difference is relatively significant, handling could be squirrelly.

If you want "cheap" and don't give a hoot about performance, you could try a retread (Naking or Republic?) Wheelguyz.com handles those brands. Call and you should get a better price and selection than what's on the web.

I do not recommend or endorse these brands of tires, I have no personal knowledge. But generally speaking you get what you pay for.

the easy way to check is with a penny in the tires tread, place a penny into a tread groove with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head..you need new tires.

Also if the ware bars (solid bars that run across the face of the tire) are even with the rest of the tread, you need new tires.

You can go out and buy a simple tread depth gauge (a few bucks at the auto-parts store) and get an exact measurement. they way to calculate how much tread is left is by taking a reading of how much tread there is (in 32nds or an inch) and subtract it from the tires original tread depth. Lets say you tires new had 10/32 of tread, now they have 4/32nd of tread, that means you have used 6/32nd of tread, since tires have to have at least 2/32nd of tread to be legal ("safe") your tires are 50% worn.

I tend to run my tires down to the wear bars, unless the wet-grip or dry-grip gets really bad, then i change them. It can be hard to tell how much grip youve lost, since it happens over thousands of miles, and months of driving...it changes so little ever day...you may not notice.

Also rember to measure the tread from the area with the LEAST tred, usualy the inside edge of the tire. This will let you get a measurement of how much USABLE tread you have left.

I would recomend chaning all the tires, if they are at or close to the end of their life. I say this cause tires dont just ware out with miliage, they also wear out with age. If you do get only 2 tires, make sure you get the SAME BRAND/MODEL of tire. you dont want to mix/match brands or models, since the lvl of grip will be differnt this can affect the cars handling, especialy on the limit as differnt tires repond/hold diffently...also important on a car with stability control programs.

if you need any more help just ask.
happy motoring

I find the rears wear faster than the fronts. Put the 13,000-mile tires on the back and the new ones up front. Then you should wear out the back tires in 7,000 miles and get the same type of tires you have up front for the back.
You could also get four new tires and sell the two good ones here; people are always looking for individual tires around here.

I wouldnt get a used tire, or retread, esp on a performance vehicle, its best to spend the extra cash and get a good tire the first time, might also save you money over getting used tires and needing new ones again in a few months.

Also sometimes places that sell used tires with cut or burn more tread in....so a tire with very little tread now had a great deal of tread. This is a BIG NO NO, since you are now running the tire into parts of the tread that were never meant to contact the road, this could cause a flat, or lead to hot spots and blow outs!

You would be better off going with new tires from a el-cheapo brand, than used/retreads from a major brand.

when you divided the cost of tires, say 120 bucks each installed (500 total with tax and all) by the miles you drive on them, its pretty cheap...say 20k miles thats about $0.03 cents a mile or 40 bucks a month over a year. its really not that much for a safe and fun to drive car.

plus new tires smell so good.

as long as the two fronts match each other and the two rears match each other, you're ok.
