People with Toyo T1-Rs...
How many miles did it take to fully break-in these tires? I've had them for 600miles and they've improved handling from new, but still not as grippy as I expected.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I think mine took 250-300... hard to tell. I've been very happy with mine (I've written praise for them all over this forum), but I don't drive hard enough on a regular basis to really test their limits. The few times I have, though, they've stepped out very progressively; it didnt come as a surprise, & I still felt completely in control.

At 10,000 miles I sold them. I found overall, regardless of Toyo's marketing, they were inferior tires to the T1-S in both dry and wet handling.
The T1-R seems to have softer sidewalls, which is why its rated higher in regards to "ride quality and noise level".
I have since replaced my T1-R's with hankook Ventus R212's, which made the T1-R's feel like all seasons by comparison (in the dry).
Here's my little graph I made to counter toyo's.
I really loved the T1-S's, and wanted to love the T1-R's, but they just aren't the same tire...compromises suck. If you are waiting for the T1-R's to breakin and suddenly provide magical handling and grip...you'll be waiting until the tread hits cord.

This certainly doesn't match my experience. I find the T1-Rs to have better turn-in comapred to the T1-Ss, with grip at least as good. My 245s grip better than the 225 OEM Potenzas did, and I replaced the Potenzas well before they were worn out.
Of course, they don't grip as well as your Hankooks. Those are one of the top choices for street tire autocross competitors. But the Toyos should last longer and provide better comfort, as you indicate.
As you say, compromises suck, unless it's the compromise YOU want. Everything is a compromise.

I will agree with your comment on the turn in, but I still got less overall grip with the T1-R's. Everything just felt...I dunno, softer. I loved the T1-S's so much I ran them down till the tread was nearly gone, exciitedly bought the T1-R's as a replacement, and waited for them to break in for 10,000 miles.
The track and autox performance was noticably degraded. They always seemed to be squeeling with the tinest of efforts. I tried nearly a 10 psi differential trying to dial them in...no matter what I did they never gripped as well as my T1-S's.
Who knows, maybe I got a magical set of T1-S's, and a 5:00pm friday set of T1-R's. I just know I was all smiles with the T1-S's, and couldn't wait to get rid of the T1-R's.
I really miss the T1-S's rain performance though...those things were rediculous. It was like it wasn't even raining. The hankooks have no where near the same level of rain performance .

That is odd. I've heard one other person say the T1-Rs weren't as good as the 'Ss for track use (in a 195/50-15 size). But I've had both on my Miata and I would never say the R's had a lot less grip than the S's. In fact, I was just thinking the other day that my current setup on my Miata (JICs set super low, with 195/50-15 T1-Rs) have about as much grip as my old setup (Tokico Illuminas w/GC sleeves, with about 1 inch higher ride height) did with 205/50-15 Falken Azenis 215s, at least on the street. Which is to say, the lower ride height & better camber control of the stiffer JICs more or less offset the grip differential in the tires. I won't say that with 100% certainty, since I never got to test these two setups back to back, but I was getting pretty good grip out of my Rs with the JICs.
On the RX-8 I really like the T1-Rs for street use. Again, though, it's because of the overall combination of attributes, rather than all-out performance. Sorry they didn't work out for you (and perhaps the original poster). I can understand how they would be lower grip than the 'kooks but it's odd that they struck you as lower performance than the Ss.

I had T1-S's and now I have T1-R's on and to me I never noticed that big of a difference in handeling from the T1-S's to the T1-R's. I do think it the T1-S's is alittle more sticky then the T1-R's. I run the psi at 32 about on both sets.
