Rotor grooved with less than 6k miles

Hello,

So recently i've been hearing some light squealing from my rear passenger tire when hitting the brakes kind of light, that would go away when i put more pressure on the brakes. Now that it finally warmed up in Illinois and I have my windows down, it became more apparent. So I checked it out and there are significant grooves in the rotor. But all of the other rotors look fine.

Now I don't do alot of driving (it's my only car and i've had it for 19 months and have less than 6000 miles on it) When I do drive it truly is all highway and NOT at rush hour. I live in the city and take public transportation for local things including my commute to work.

In addition, one time when I looked after it had been sitting for a few days, there was that light rust on the other three rotors, but nothing on the one in question.

Has anyone else seen and/or experienced this? Where one pad appears to be doing more work than the others?

Thanks

Jim

PS It's a 2004 Manual Transmission that I bought in December 2004 off the lot.

One last thing..... I tried searching for posts, but I didn't come up with anything like this (this is not the squealy brake issue, it's about a grooved rotor)

So the dealer just called me and said that, most likely, rust formed on the rotor, and the brake pads made them wider. He then tells me that these "adjustments" are covered for only 12 months or 12,000 miles. (I'm at 17 months but only 6000 miles). And the work is going to cost $370 (replace the rear pads and then cut both of the rear rotors). I then asked if this is going to happen again if I let the car sit for a little bit, and he didn't have an answer. So we're waiting to hear back from Mazda's warranty department.

Has anyone else come across anything like this?

Thanks

Jim

PS Thanks for at least letting me get this off my chest.

Nope the only thing that I have seen on mine is the rotors rust evertime it rains or the car is washed, I think my squeeling is not from a grooved rotor.

Sorry I couldn't help out

Well, if you need to spend as much money as what the dealer is asking then you could get replacement slotted rotors for that cost and upgrade to like Hawk HPS (sans labor). But since you only have 6K on the car, I'd say take it to another dealer and see if they don't hassle you.

I was just informed by me dealer that one of my front rotors has run-out. They offered to turn all the rotors for a pretty reasonable price but I declined. At work we have a full machine shop and turn employee rotors for free (nice perk). I thought that just one rotor doing this at 23000 miles was bad, but at 6000 miles? I never got a real reason for just the one doing it, but my dealer kinda sucks if they think it will cost them money.

A friend of mine (and all his friends) buy cross drilled and slotted rotors from this ebay store for hella cheap. Under $300.00 for all four corners! For me, if I would just buy new rotors and install them at work. I just would like an explanation for why just ONE went bad....

My rotors were slighly warped a couple thousand miles ago, and were turned for free by the dealer. Now they are the same way again and they wanted about $100 to turn them this time, I said no thanks. The brakes on the car are great, but the rotors sucks *** when it comes to not warping. When I slow down I get a lungeing affect from them. I am just going to buy some nice slotted rotors from a vendor on this site and be done with the cheap Mazda ones.

Supposibly it happens from heating them up and cooling them off too fast, like washing the car with cold water right after driving around town.

I brake hard a lot and my rotors are still fine at 31,000 miles.

But I do little things like not clamp down on the brakes at a stop light when they're hot. No idea if that's helped me, or if you just had bad luck with some lame rotors...

The frst thing I thought was that they might be warped, but the dealer said they werent.... heavy braking + unseen puddle.

They didn't know what caused it. My dealer worked with warranty, and they put on two new rear rotors, but they wouldn't do the brake pads. My dealer decided to cover the brake pads. So, ultimately, there was no cost to me, except some time on the phone.

Thanks
