Sumitomo HTR ZIII

Just got a set of the HTRZ III last week to replace a set of S-03's for daily driving duty. Went with these because they were readily available at the tire shop around the corner at online pricing.

The 300 UTQG (compared to the S-03's 220 rating) isn't exactly competition rubber, but it's well within an acceptable performance rating for street use (OEM 8090's are a 280 as a comparison), so I figured I'd lose a little grip compared to the S-03's in exchange for some more tread life.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from these tires but they are surprisingly grippy and responsive- enough so for street duty.

Definately worth consideration for those looking for an OEM replacement or for something similar to a Yokohama S.Drive or Falken FK 452.

The ZIII are classed by tirerack in the same class as the S-03 and are a much newer design. I wouldn't expect them to lose much in a straight head to head comparison. UTQG ratings are pretty useless.

Maybe, but UTQG is used by sanctioning bodies in their rulebook for classification.

And, the S-03's 220 rating as compared to the Dunlop Z1's 200 rating reflects the amount of grip I was getting from the S-03's when I was using them as track day tires before getting the Z1. The S-03 was similar in overall grip, only giving up some lateral response to the Z1. I doubt the HTR ZIII's would fare well at the track.

This review at Tire Rack confirms my suspicions.

I track about 4 times a year so was looking to save some money from the stock Pilot Sports and these were nearly have the cost and had some decent reviews here. They have been perfectly fine around town which is always spirited for me, noise is fine, only complaint I have is the front tires got really torn up and chunked on the edges from on day and only 3 (1/2) hour lapping sessions, admittedly I was pushing the car to the limit and there was also a brutal hairpin turn on the course. But, for the price I feel it's a fair trade off. I tracked the Michelin Pilot Sport PS 2's as well and couldn't tell a difference in performance, but the wear was more even and the edges didn't get chunked out. Overall I'm very satisfied performance and daily driving wise and would purchase again with likely a second set put aside for the track.

Yes, but for every good example I can quote a bad one. The Bridgestone Turanza ER33, which tirerack considers a Grand Touring tire, is rated at 140.

Then, it wouldn't qualify for an under 200 UTQG race class, lol.
