Did a search on this and did not find really anything. Anyway currently when it is cold outside my tire pressure sensor light comes on but once the car is driven for a little while it goes off. Is this normal for cold weather. Also I read somewhere that tire pressure will drop in cold weather if so how much should that drop be before I worry?

I believe many if not all of the dealers are sending out cars with tire pressures in the 20's.. mine were like 25. When your tires heat up, the air inside expands and the tire pressure light goes off, but when it's cold and the tire pressure hovers in the low 20's low they come on. It's a good Idea to check them and bring them up to spec.

 

Yes, it's normal, and yes, it's been discussed before. It's because your pressures are dropping as the car sits and the air in the tires cools down, only to expand back to above the low threshold when you warm them back up by driving on them.

The simple (and I would have thought obvious) solution is to actually check your tire pressures when they're cold, per the manual. Failing that, just bump them up to, say, 36psi when warm and they shouldn't fall below the threshold when cold.

 

My tire pressure sensors have only gone off once since it has been cold and that was due to the tire pressure dropping in the cold weather. You should look at the pressure requirements printed on the side of your tires and keep the pressure up within this specs. I would be a little concerned about a sensor going off and then later turning itself off. Either you are on the edge of the point where the pressure sensor is triggered or you have a faulty sensor. Take it to the dealer and let them look at it.

 

When the TPM light comes on... check your tire pressures. Period.

THEN, if all pressures are in the normal range (about 26 to 42psi) for the sensor, then you should check with a dealer. Mine was doing the same thing the first cold weather hit; when I checked my tire pressures, they had all gotten down to around 25 or 26psi. Pumped 'em back up, they've been fine since.

I can see these damn TPMS sensors becoming a problem. Both in that people will NOT check tire pressures because the light isn't on and people flipping out because the light is on due to cold weather and the pressure dropping.

Do yourself a favor...on a Sat. morning, while drinking your cofee, go outside and check the pressure on your tires, BEFORE you drive it. Put the pressure to what you want, do this 1-2 times a month.

don't let your tires have un-even pressures around all 4 corners.

Sorry this is my first EVER car and I am trying to make sure I do everything right. I read the manual front to back and saw that the TP should be 32 what I was not sure about was in cold weather what is an acceptable drop and when I should be concerned. I have no knowledge of cars so whateva the manual says and what people are saying here is all the knowledge I have when it comes to a car.

 

I installed snowtires without the TPMS sensors on the rims. Now the TPMS flashes. Is there a way to turn off the TPMS?
