Tire rotation patterns

I just got some new tires (Bridgestone 960AS), and read the little care booklet that came with them. In the section on rotation they show only X-patterns, and say that if you have unidirectional tires you need to mount and demount.

Kind of startling, since I remember when radials were only rotated fore-aft, then when they decided it was OK to cross them as long as they were not unidirectional. The idea of re-mounting a pair every 5000 miles or so is rather startling.

I'm only planning on fore-aft rotation, but just wonder if anyone actually does this.
