Tire Wear
Today I went into to my dealership to get my oil changed before winter, after I left, I looked over the check list they gave me and I noticed something strange. On the trie part they notied that I only have 20% tread left on my back wheels (Stock tires). Now I haven't even had this car a year (had it 6 Months) and it has less then 9K miles on it. Aslo, I drive it pretty normally so this seems weird to me. At the end of the week I am going up to my friend's tire shop to get winter tires put on ,so I will have him take a look. But if it is true WTF how could my tires wear out so fast?

First of all look at the tire they are talking about and see if there is some unusual tire wear. They could have marked the paper wrong. Let us know.
If it is true then it means that your alignment is FUBAR. A bad alignment can cause your tires to wear unevenly or faster then they should. Did you buy the car new from mazda? If so, I'm almost 100% positive that they will have to give you new tire(s) and an alignment free of charge.

Well I had my next door neighbor (He's a mechanic) look at my back tires and he told me he would agree with what they wrote on my check list. So this morning I called my dealer. I talked to the head of the services department, he told me that the wear on my back tires is nothing uncommon for stock tires on RX8. He also told me that those tires are really soft are only rated for about 15- 20k miles. So is this true? what are other people getting out of their stock back tires?

i would just take a look and see what the tread depth is. shen i was on my first set of tires my dealership said i only had 2/32's....so when i got to work i checked (i work for a toyota dealership) adn i had 7/32 in teh rear and 9/32 in the front.
some tech's dont' even look they just put a number down. i wouldn't freak out until you see what they are really at. (also what is the tread wear on your tires? above or below 200?)

it's true that the tires wear out quickly but at 9k miles you should have more than enough tread left. I went through mine in 16k miles and they still had some tread on them but couldn't stand the stock RE040s.
I've heard a lot of people having crazy alignment settings on their rx8s that came straight from the mazda factory. Do yourself a favor and go to a professional alignment shop...not one of those Tire Discounters joints but a real performance shop and ask them to give you a proper alignment. Not only will it do wonders on tread wear but it might actually make your car handle better.

I'm at 19K on mine and they need to be replaced. Kinnda off topic: but where can I buy one of those things to measure tire depth?

I was burning through tires at one point.. went through two sets of Kuhmo Ecstas in roughly 7K miles (and my driving habits are fine)... I went to a professional tire shop and they said my alignment was almost 1 degree off on the rear tires. I got it adjusted and viola, better handling and no more tire wear.
It was unusual though because the tires were wearing out evenly, so I didn't think it was an alignment issue, but a lesson learned.
