Which Tyres?
Hey sorry if this topic is repetitive, I did a search but didnt really find what im looking for..
Im in process of buying new tyres, and Im getting a lot of mixed opinions and advice from various tyre shops. Course half the time they mainly promoting the tyres that they find to be most profitable, so I dont really know whether to trust and whether the tyre they want to sell me will actually benefit me.
So i'll list the various tyres that Ive been told, and Id love to hear what my fellow RX8'ers think of these tyre brands
1. Good Year F1 Eagles GSD3
2. Dunlop Sports Maxx
3. Toyo T1R
Size I'll be getting 245/40/R18 (I have aftermarket rims which are a bit wider)
Basically want a tyre that handles great on the dry and wet etc. Cost wise, I definately dont want to go cheap, and I cant justify going 2 pricey as I dont really drive the car as hard to begin with. So somewhere in between
Thnx in advance

Kall, get a hold of the latest Wheels magazine (May edition). They have just run a full on tyre test of a lot of the big brands. If I recall correctly, the TOYO's didn't score all that well.

Yokohamas avs 100 is a good tire for the dollar, not that great in the wet though. But a lot of the tests showed avs100 as a great performer in the dry.
Kumho ecsta spts are suppose to be good also, and not pricey.
But if I had to pick from those options, eagle f1s are reputable and haven't heard a negative thing about them.

i have the T1-R's in 245/40 on the stock wheels, & i really enjoy them, as I have professed many a time on here. I don't have a single complaint about them: they're sticky, quiet, comfortable but responsive... it was just what I was looking for in a street tire. They are great. However, from all I've heard about the GSD3's, that would be a great choice as well. I don't think you can go wrong with either. Good luck!

I got ahold of the Wheels mag now, and from what I can see Dunlop Sports Maxx did do pretty well.....
The Good Year Eagles they tested were RS-02.. I was told to avoid them, but they came 2nd in overall tests.. the GSD3 which Im thinking of are spose to be better.. so I can only assume they would perform better then RS02
Toyos seem to havent done too well..
No Yokos used in the test
IZoomZoomI thnx for the Yoko input, tyre performance in the wet for me would probably be a bit more important then in the dry (IMHO).
Interesting tho in the tests the XR6 Ford was used. I can only assume the 8 would do a tad better considering lighter car, better brakes etc?

Thnx, im getting all different kind of views on the T1-R's. Some people saying they are great, others sayin they are not..
Im being told the GSd3 good years are noisy.. but how much more noisy can they get compared to the OEM Bridgestones that we got at the moment?

It really depends. if you are looking for all out performance tires to take to the track the Toyo's are not the best tire, but if you are just looking for a good street tire, that gives you good (but not great) dry & wet traction than the Toyo's are a good choice. They are also inexpensive & they have a high treadwear rating (last long time). There are other tires that do one or two things well, but they have shortcomings (price or fast tread wear). Sports Compact Car had a tire writeup last month, and they like the Toyo's as well.
Just figure out what you main concern is, prioritize & then choose. For example the Falken RT 615 has far better dry traction then the Toyo's that I got, but they have a short tread life (as most maximum traction tires do), and Ir arely track my car, and a few seconds here and there doesn't mean much to me. I wanted a quieter tire, that still holds well when I drive it aggressively on the street or a canyon run, but won't kill me when it occasionaly rains as well.

When you are looking at tire tests, you want to see how they will work on your car or one close to yours. Example, don't use a test on a front drive car as the bible for a rear drive car. As I understand it, the Ford XR6 is a rear drive car, but I believe it is a bit heaver than the RX8. The Tire Rack does their testing with a BMW 330 which is closer to our configuration. I'm not going to suggest you import your tires from them. But, you can check their tests and see how they compare in their tests. They test what they sell, so not all tires are tested.

Fanman- totally agree, my priority would be wet handling. not really looking 4 a tyre to take to the track, as if i go it will be very rare and more for fun rather then getting the quickest time. Problem with looking at the various tests and such are most of the tyres seem to be rating very very similar... so bit tricky for me
alnielsen- ive seen the ratings on that website. when i saw the tests in the wheels mag and they used the xr6 i understood there would be differences between the two cars.
I think bottom line is.. every1 has different driving habits, so 1 tyre someone loves, someone else might hate.
sigh this is worse then trying to pick out the right outfit for a first date..

toyo tires always give you feed back, even when you hit the limit they will still hold some grip. some other tires will have excellent grip but when you hit the limit you are like driving on ice.
you have to read all articals on the tires you want and see if the pro find it easy to drive not the quickest lap time or excellent traction.
a tire that talks to you are the best tire to get and save you tons of repair cost.

I just ordered a pair of Falken 615 RT....
I dunno, If I were you, id go for the F1 's
They are an incredible tire, amazing in the wet, amazing in the dry, and DAMN good treadlife.
It all depends on if you want to spend the money, because they arnt cheap.

Well I eventually got the Good Year F1s yesterday, first thing i noticed was how much more quiet they are compared to the stock bridgestones As for grip etc, I definately feel secure (now im going from pretty much bald tyres to these, so my ride felt sooo much better), My main concern when chosing tyres was for security, and I feel I succeeded with that.
I wont be driving my 8 much this week but on Sunday we got a cruise planned with some other 8s which is about 2 hour drive along twisties etc, so I'll be able to give better analysis then
For now.. this is wat i noticed, the quietness and security of great traction/grip on the road. I think also my ride is a lot smoother/less bumpy. I have the koni shocks and lowered, so I generally always would feel bumps on the road a lot more, but now i felt like it wasnt so bad.
Thnx for all previous advice guys
Ta, Kall.

Just remember to drive about 80-90km before you drive hard in the twisties, because you need to wear the tyre mould release compound off the tires, or otherwise the car will slide about a fair bit. Have fun and let us know how the tires go on the twisties.
