Wheel weight 23lbs

Ok I have checked everywhere.

There are two size wheels for the Eight.

Is 23 lbs for the 16" ?

How much do the 18" weigh?

No where did it say what the wheel size was for the 23lbs.

I believe the weight for the 18" were 23 lbs. A few people that weighed their wheels, the pictures showed were the 18" rims.

The weight of the stock 18 has been weighed to be anywhere from 18-23 lbs by people.

tpryor has done a lot of racing with stock rims and he measured them at 18.5 lb. https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...5&postcount=14 Most people measure the entire wheel rim combo and then subtract out the weight of the tire (usually the RE040) to come up with an estimate. They don't count for the valvestem, balancing weights, tire wear etc and they probably don't use the best scale.

Also chrome isn't weightless. So I would guess that the dark chrome wheel is at LEAST a pound heavier than stock.

I am going to go with Trypor's numbers until someone proves them to be wrong. I think 23lbs is a little high.

The stock wheel is a nice wheel.

Just to be clear - this was the 18" wheel only. No TPMS sensors or valve stems. I was in the scale "business" for 16 years, and I calibrated the scale myself before weighing, so I'll stand by the weight.

I recently weighed the polished wheels I have, and they also weighed 18.5 lbs. on the same scale. The only supporting evidence I have is the set of new wheels I bought from Mazda Motorsports - they shipped at 19 lbs. each - in the box!

HOWEVER, my 18x8 SSR Competitions are 15.7 lbs. each. Too bad we are taking the year "off" from autocrossing the car (money) - I have to look at them every time I go into the garage <sob>.

The 16's weigh about 17-18 lbs. (as measured on an inaccurate digital scale).

Damn, i've been trying to get the weight of my M20 MKW wheels.

I think I found it once. Somewhere around 27lbs. Does that sound right?

If that's the case the RX8 can kick *** on the S2000 and WRX on the track.

Interesting because if you look in Brillo's virtual garage it has him weighing the bare rim & it registers at 22 lbs. 5 oz. :

I'm curioius why the weight of some heavy wheels indicates that the RX-8 would be a better track car than two other cars, both of which are much more powerful and (at least in the case of the S2000) are lighter and handle better in corners?

Fanman,

I wonder if there are two different wheel types floating around. Almost 4 lbs is a little too much to be do to measurement inaccuracy.

this sounds like a case of confusion with/without tires with/without TPMS monitors/valve stems

I have a set of four TMPS monitors (valves stems are the same unit) laying around...I'll try to weigh them tomorrow...this will help you out I hope...from what I remember they aren't that have though

With the reduce weight at the wheels there is more RWHP.

Which means the RX 8 would be even in the straights and quicker in the corners.

The S2000 could slightly out pull me on the straights. Then the distance would remain the same.

I'm still confused. The RX-8 is a very fine car, especially for a four door coupe. Certainly, one could mod an RX-8 to be faster and to handle better than a stock S2000 or WRX (assuming FI wouldn't blow up the Renesis engine), and very light wheels would be a part of that process. But it is not clear that that's what you are saying, which is why I'm still confused. People are saying that the stock wheels weigh somewhere between 18 and 23 pounds. With those wheels, the typical 2004-2005 RX-8 dynos at somewhere around 175-180 rwhp, corrected. The typical 2004-2005 S2000 dynos at somewhere around 205-210 rwhp, corrected. And the S2000 corners significantly better than the RX-8, stock for stock. Nobody would choose a stock RX-8 over a stock S2000 (or, probably, a stock WRX) on any track, anywhere; why would that change because you have some 27 pound wheels on your car?

Maybe the extra weight and bling intimidates the s2000 owners into slowing down?

OK I have my summer set of OEM 18" wheels in my living room as I'm layering wax before having tires installed (the OEM potenzas) and wheels mounted/balanced

I weighed with a home scale (no decimals) at 22lbs so I do believe it is the famouse 22.5 number

I can post pics of the wheel on the scale to appease you people :p

I can also weigh the OEM center caps, the Rotary Center Caps (which is what I'm installing), the TPMS monitors which are in a bag right now, lug nutz, and the tires which are in the garage.

I just need to get a better scale so I'll pick one up during lunch and we can help end this debate. I think Tryphor was weighing the 16s or something else was going on.

If you want me to check anything else like valve stem cap weight I can :p I'm adding the rotary valve stem caps next week if I ever get around to ordering them...I'll weigh those too.

sure from what I remember there is a DOT code on the back of the spoke where there is a recess for weight savings as it is probably a lost wax casting.

I'll get some pics to you or type up the info

xactly

too many people are obsessed with the weight of their wheels to understand it has a SLIGHT impact of performance.

I weighed my std wheel at ~10kg or 22pounds and the scale is acurate to about 20 grams as I calabrated it. you can have 200-300 grams of variation between wheels.

ok I went crazy tonight and weighed EVERYTHING piece by piece...I've got wheels on a lbs scale to one decimal and all the other pieces: center caps/nutz/TPMS I put on an oz scale...I've got pictures of everything

I'll do the tires tomorrow since it is freakin cold out and don't want to run into the garage in shorts :p

So, we have weights listed from 18.5 to 22 lbs for the stock 18" wheels.

So which is it? That's a pretty big gap.

I just installed 16.8 lbs SSR GT2s and I swear I can notice a difference in acceleration...

I'd like to see your pics, I have a pic of the stock wheel and tire hanging in my vgarage. I also took pics of the stock wheel hanging standalone and got the weight of ~22lb.

Light weight wheels are a good idea. in the interim, I'm getting some lightweight tires to knock about 5lb off each wheel.
