Will 255 fit on stock wheels?

I am doing a little bit of track day and I am thinking either to get 4x 245/40 18 or 255/35 18 in order to go faster in turns.

The reason to try to get the wider is also because I am planing on putting a Turbo in December as my 35th birthday gift.

I don't want to change the stock wheels as to get good lightweight 8.5/9 x18 wheels is a least $1500-$2500, definitely not worth that kind of money IMO.
I like the stocker.
I don't want to change the springs or the shocks neither as I don't want to wreck the back of my 13 months old and my newborn sitting in the back everyday (in car seats of course).

The local tire discount shop says NO PROBLEM
Not sure if they know what they are speaking about.

Anyone using 255 on stock rim? Feedbacks?
Thank you

I run 255 on a 8.5" wheel and thought 245 was the widest for 8" wheel. Unfortunately I do not have the answer.

Keep in mind that a 255 size tire is NOT the same between all brands so you may be able to find a 245 that is just a wide as a 255.

There are guys racing with 285s on 8" wide wheels. I had my 255-40-18 Michelin PS2 on an 18X8 for a few months, only changed because I found a different style of wheel I liked better, but had no problems with them on a stock size wheel.

street driving or autocross?

245 is a great fit for our stock wheel if you're street driving. You CAN go 255 if you really want to but most don't recommend it.

I have not seen the 285-8" combo for the street, this is a stock class racing application. I had the 245-40 before my current 255-40, they were way better than the Miata sizes 225s Mazda puts on the car. I love the 255, fills the fenders and looks tuff from behind, but I also changed to a much higher end tire.

We use the car for daily commute ( mainly my wife actually right now), I use a santa fe as I need the room for samples...
I use the car on the week end and for track days at willowspring and button willow.
My best lap time on the full track clockwise at willowsprings is 1.55 on a sunny 120 degrees Saturday with stock everything and 5k miles on car.

I am moving back to France in 2 months and we are moving the cars at the same time. I have friends doing track days with Audi A3 3.2L, impreza STI, Mini Copper S....
I know most of them will be fastest in the straight (I don't care that much) but I should be probably be faster than most in turns but maybe the Sub, and being a Motorcycle rider before anything I really need the extra push of the turbo to remind me somewhat my KTM 950. ( wife said for your birthday... )

When you ''race'' the car from my perspective I miss either the mid range torque of my KTM 950 V twin or the high end of my ZX6RR, and the rear grip in turns is really a joke compare to the rest of the chassis and what the car can handle...

So, to answer the question, I don't street race (is it illegal street racing that we are speaking about when we speak about street race?) It is not really autocross (which I guess means short track) but really for full length track like laguna seca and willosprings.

For those using 255 and racing, do you have recommendation as far as decent tire not too expensive. This is just one out of my 10 other passions so I am looking for inexpensive options here. Value is the key.

Don't forget that tires are not an investments, we are just buying time to **** friends off.

Thx
f

Actually, one last questions:
Anybody ''racing or ''driving 225/235/245 in front with 255 in rear?
Does it make much different compare to same width on 4 corners.
Because the rear tires worn out faster I might be thinking about getting 4 255 and using 2 of them in rear for now and stay with the 225 in front.

What do you guys think?

I run in San Diego or Irvine to avoid the heat, and smell from the nearby recycling plant.

Stagger leads to under-steer. You want to keep it square until you get to the point you cant fit a bigger front tire, or have 500+ hp.
