If you aren't aware, RX-8s before model year 2010 have 3 holes behind the Mazda emblem on the trunk. I wanted the Mazda & RX-8 emblems gone, and couldn't rest until they were.
I spoke with people at several auto body/collision shops and had a variety of responses including:
- My computer says it'll be upwards of $600 because we have to paint the whole trunk
- [strange look on their face] You want to do what? Why? It's going to be really expensive, don't bother...
- Yeah we could fill the holes with filler (hm, I wonder about you -- everyone else says the holes have to be welded)
In the end I found a local shop that did the job properly for $175 and I can't tell anything was done. I think they painted up to the lip spoiler line.
I had started to wonder whether this job was possible for a price that would let me stay married to my wife and also not muck up an otherwise pristine car. I'm very relieved to find out that it is.
