'H' Pattern Dash Crack Over Passenger AIR BAG
#26
Just joined the club, and read this thread for information on finding the replacement part for the right(passenger) side dash for my 2009 RX8. I just had the defective Takata air bag replaced, and my service rep mentioned that he personally attributes the cracks to the underlying, deteriorating Takata airbag module. This has not been generally acknowledged by Mazda, and certainly not by Takata, but there it is. The dash components on the driver side and centrally have shown no cracking in spite of the heat and humidity that my ungaraged, South Florida car is subjected to. I hope to avoid replacing the whole dash for the $1200 I have been quoted. Cracks are apparently showing up in lots of Toyotas, Nissans, what have you. Some manufacturer could make a bundle. Suggestions appreciated, otherwise wish me luck!

Sorry but that is just rubbish from the "Dealer", the cracking of the Dash has Nothing to do with the TAKATA Inflator, they are factually two separate items some distance apart.
Have a look at some images here and you will get an understanding of how the module mounts behind the dashboard.
Yes, other makes have Dashboard cracks, the seam is weak and does not stand up to constant changes in temperatures/sun/cold/humidity, etc.

Can anyone confirm that that FEY1-57-K5X will fit models 2009 and up? I am ready to order one and it is none returnable. I see the discussion here but I'm not certain that anyone actually used this part number on a series II
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

that's very odd to see that particular piece cracks.. I'm glad I ran into this thread. I'm very relieved my R3 doesn't suffer from this.. but I'll make sure to keep an eye out for any cracks going forward...

I was shocked to see mine crack last year given the car is garaged at all times with a cover on.
It's just a matter of time for all / most RX-8's.
Hopefully your R3 will have better luck Neo

The only thing that's really irritating me at the moment is the damn Bose amp.. I need to either find a replacement or get mine fixed.

Pretty sure it's intentionally weak where the H shape forms as this is where the airbag would deploy from in the event of a crash.

Replacement Longevity?
Bumping this thread.
Question to any of you guys that bought the $350-400 replacement cover; has it held up?
Winter project for me is some interior restoration. I’d like to replace the cracked cover I have, but only if the “updated” design is actually an improvement.
