Chassis Code???

B228JB What is your location...Country??
Chassis CODE......Mazda and most car makers now talk either VIN Number or Chassis Number (same thing)
I would really like for ANY USA or Australian to show where it says on your VIN # or Chassis Number anywhere is says SE3P...becasue it does not.
Your Chassis Number Starts with FE...
Australian Spec Cars...like mine...are the following..
Series I RX-8's
JMOFE103140300455.... yes, all the numbers mean something..first 4 means MY 2004.
Series II RX-8's
JMOFE103290300455... the 2 after the 3 designates the Series II, the 9 means an 09 Model Year.
USA Spec Cars...
JM1FE173150100043 (Series 1 MY 2005)
JM1FE173290100043 (Series II MY 2009)
Only Europe and Japan Use SE
JMZSE1731.....
JMZSE1732.....
.................................................. ...........
There are variances on the VIN Number depending where the car is Made for or exported to..
USA in their VIN'S incorporate the MY (Model Year) the UK does not..they have numbers there but they have no meaning...
So the first 3 Alpha Letters JMO or JM1 or JMZ is
World Manufacturer Identifier "JM"..and the 0,1 or Z, the country or region of destination.
Next the FE or SE is the Carline Series ..meaning RX-8, FD is RX-7, FB is RX-7
Next two Numbers mean "Body Code" 17 Means Coupe, so does 10.
Next the 3 or N means Engine Type 3 is the High Power Engine, N is the 4 Port Low power Engine.
Next number 1 or a 2 is 'Minor Change Code' (1 is Series 1, 2 is Series 2), some markets also have a number there for Transmission Type...5 speed or 6 speed.
Next Number is either Model Year, or in some countries that don't use MY..it is No Meaning.
Next Number 0 means the location of where the car is made, all RX-8's are 0, it means Hiroshima Plant.
1 means Hofu Plant, but NO RX-8's are made at Mazda Hofu Plant. The Mazda 3 and 6 are.
Last...the Last 6 numbers are the cars actual Serial Number.

Hey there...Got a question about figuring out the meaning of the VIN.
I am following along with your analysis, but what if the 9th digit is different than what you mentioned?
You said that it would be a '1' or a '2' (series 1 or 2) and that some cars may have a '5' or '6'(for 5 or 6-speed). What if it is a '3' or a '7'? Could that be an indication of the type of option package it has? Grand Touring versus Sport?
By the way, I am talking about a 2004 model 6-speed in each case.
Thanks.

Thanks. I had a feeling this was true, that the VIN says nothing about the options on the car. My insurance company is trying to tell me that while figuring out the payoff on my totaled RX-8. They say my VIN says Sport Package, when I know I have the GT. This gives me the ammo I need to fight back.
I found a list of packages and options for the 2004 RX-8 on cars.com. I will show them that so I can get the extra $$ I need to buy another one.
Thanks again for the info.

Dealers can tell more from the code however, e.g. the paint finish of the wheels of my Shinka differing from other trims - not directly from the VIN itself, but they know from their lookup tables based on the year and serial number.

2004 4 port 5 speed s1
2011 4 port auto s2
2008 6 port 6 speed
#18
this doesn't make sense to me, I've had 2 rx8s 1xs1 and 1xs2 that start with a 7 in the Vin code, my current 2008 s1 is jmz and chassis is recorded as jmz but the 2004 and 2011 I've previously owned both said se3p chassis number but Vinson start as 7A for both and the engine code you mentioned doesn't make sense on the 2004, perhaps the 4 port 5 speed manual is different coding? I'll attach the details of all 3, 1 is 2004,2008 and 2011 details
2004 4 port 5 speed s1
2011 4 port auto s2
2008 6 port 6 speed
2004 4 port 5 speed s1
2011 4 port auto s2
2008 6 port 6 speed
