ONLY USE GENUINE Mazda OIL FILTERS in Series II (R3)

ATTN ASH: need ur opinion on filter P/N
3 oil filters.
1) mazda filter P/N ending in 302/302A (i have 4 left) manufactured by tokyo roki
2) mazda filter P/N ending in 302 9A mazda filter assembled in europe, newer version?
3) fram 7317 filter
i got the 302 9A mazda filter when i let the dealership do an oil change for me, and to say the truth, i like the newer version as it seems to flow better when i pulled it off tonight. its internal perforation is ~4mm wide compared to the 302/302A's ~2mm perforations. i get about 16PSI idle oil pressure compared to 18+ on an older model oil filter, which is how i came about my curiosity...
i know u have a series II rx8, but i just wanted ur opinion on this as it seems like a better/newer OEM version filter to restock on. the easier it flows will create less stress and heat/wear from the pump... so its all relevent.
the fram 7317 seems to be the same size as the series II oem filter. its about 1/2 taller than the 302/302A's and share the same internal perforation size.
i personally do not know if it will flow just as well as the 302 9A's as i've done new oil... at any case, i can also use the left over frams on my wife's honda...
so... i wanted to see ur opinion on rather to restock on 302 9A's or just go with more 302/302a or the fram 7317's.
i'm thinking u'll say to go with the newer 302 9A due to the revised internal design for better flow?

OK...This advise is for Series 1 RX-8's ONLY..
Well the GENUINE Mazda Part Number for SERIES 1 RX-8 Oil Filter is..
B6Y1-14-302A Oil Filter (T Roki) (Do NOT USE ON SERIES 2 2009~ RX-8's)
For the USA that Part Number SUPERSEDES (Done by Mazda NAO PARTS) to a
B6Y1-14-302 9A, the 9 at the end of the Part Number means Locally Sourced or from another
manufacturer/supplier, BUT, has been tested by Mazda and Approved for USE in a Mazda.
They can even look the REAL deal Packaging Wise, by that I mean GENUINE Mazda Parts Box.
I would prefer if you gave me the Complete Part Number, rather than just the last part as most Mazda oil filters have 302 on the end.
I am Assuming it is a B6Y1-14 oil Filter???, if it is without the A, it should be genuine and can be used OK, although this would be a very old new filter.
Now you could also have another Mazda filter (I think this is the one you have?)
Out of Mazda 929 and some of their V6 engines, they are the same size, but are longer or taller.
That Part Number is..
JEY0-14-302 which supersedes to a
JEY0-14-302A which are BOTH Genuine GENUINE!...
That then Supersedes to
JEY0-14-302 9A Which is a Non Genuine MNAO Approved as I said Earlier.
Same applies if you have a 302 or 302A without a # 9 you have made in Japan Oil Filters.
The JEY0 is not meant for the Series 1 RX-8, but will fit and work OK, it has the same By Pass pressure as the B6Y1.
Personally I am not a Framm man..I like GENUINE GENUINE if I can get it.
Basically the 9A ones are usually purchased direct by MNAO at a cheaper price, so there is more profit margin in them for the Distributor rather than buying direct from Mazda Japan.
Even Mazda Australia Parts does this and they are Owned by MMC Japan...go figure!
I would be using the GENUINE Genuine ones you have...

thanx ash for the prompt reply!
yes, i'm located in USA and i'm using the tokyo roki B6Y1-14-302/302A. and i will, according to ur info on the part being superseded, be using the newer B6Y1-14-302 9A.
i did not get the box for the 9A filter as i got an oil change the same time i had some warranty work done, but i immediately noticed the silver base ring on the filter that it differed from the old plain black filter. and apparently, i realized the better design right off as i compared it to the old filter from tokyo roki that it supersedes side-by-side.
i don't think the new filter will be any cheaper, but who knows. if it is cheaper due to being locally sourced, great and great. 2 reasons to make a switch.
JEY0 may be the mazda jdm oem's... that sounded weird. but with ur clarification, i know what B6Y1 part to avoid if both items are evenly priced for our market.
thanks a bunch =)
about the fram... it is cheap, widely adaptable and available. the one i got can clear my oil pressure adaptor plate while giving me more filter media and flow surface. its also interchangeable between my other cars... sorry u don't like them. i rather OEM everything too... but i'd just break the bank.
still... thanks for the info =)

PLEASE JUST TO CLEAR THIS UP...
IF you Want a GENUINE or Mazda APPROVED Oil Filter for ANY ROTARY FOR THE PAST 25 YEARS, they ARE ALL the SAME Mazda Part Number...ALL of them..
Mazda PN #B6Y1-14-302A
EXCEPT The 2009 ON WARDS Series 2 RX-8 (FE1032), that GENUINE Mazda Oil Filter is a little Taller and Similar in Size to the JEY0-14-3029A, BUT, it does not have the HIGHER BY PASS VALVE Necessary for the Series 2 Oil Circuit/System.
ONLY USE the GENUINE Oil Filter from A Mazda Dealer or Supplier like Mazmart.
Mazda Part #N3R1-14-302
.................................................. .................................................. ...........................
Yes there are slightly Larger or much Larger filters out there made for and by other retailers like Mobil , Fram, Bosche, Lucas.
BUT almost ALL come out the same factory, just with different paint , box and logo's.
AFAIK there is still and probably won't be for a while a NON-Genuine Series 2 OIL FILTER made for the local markets, even though MANY reference Guides are saying that the 09 or 2010 is the same as the 08,07,05,06,04...WHICH IT IS NOT.
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' '''''''''''''''''''''''''''
Can you fit a N3R1 Oil Filter on a pre 09, yes it will fit and work , which is all fine, but, for those RX-8 owners that do not do regular oil and filter changes, you COULD see a situation where the OIL filter becomes Blocked and will not BY Pass BECAUSE the BP pressure is too high.
Therefore the engine could starve of OIL or more than likely the oil will no longer be filtered and you would never really know.
On the FLIP SIDE if you put a Series 1 (FE1031) (B6Y1) OIL Filter on a Series 2 (FE1032) or 2009, 2010 RX-8 you are installing a smaller filter (will fit OK), but because it has a Lower By Pass pressure and given the Series 2 has a Oil Circuit where ALL of the OIL Goes through the ENGINES Oil Filter FIRST you could have a system where your oil is always being BY Passed and NOT FILTERED, AGAIN You Will NEVER KNOW.
Over the Years I have found that Mazda do a lot or testing and Research into their Filters.
Oil, AIR and even Fuel filters designed by Mazda are Excellent, trying to re-invent their filters with
another type or brand is not a good move, as many have prove here with the RX-8 Air Filters and their true efficiency.
I personally would stick to the Model Type that is listed and leave it, change regularly and you will be fine.

If you REALLY want a Larger OIL Filter (IN SIZE) for a Series 1 RX-8 MY2004 to MY2008)
You can use a #JEY0-14-3029A which has the SAME By PASS Rating as the B6Y1-14-3029A,
it is just a taller filter and outer body, BUT, be careful IT MAY interfere with Brake Line PIPES if you have some brands of Oil Pressure Gauge Kits or Plates installed on your Filter Body Neck.
Series 2 RX-8's ONLY USE Mazda Dealer REAL GENUINE N3R1-14-302 Oil Filters.

anyone on here about to get some B6Y1-14-302 9A filters from mazmart?
just wanted to know where to get them cheap... and if mazmart can do us more solid than the dealerships here in southern cali?
down to get it from anyone's favorite vendor, as long as its cheap and reputable fast service. list their price too pls. (USD)
hmm... also wouldn't mind if they had the JEYO versions for the bigger series1 like ash said... but not sure US dealers have them?
thx

It's By Pass Pressure is too low..
For the first time ever in a Mazda Rotary Mazda have used a filter with almost Double the BY Pass Rating in the S2 RX-8's...
It has gone from a 11.4—17.1 (Min - Max) PSI in the Series 1 or B6Y1 Oil Filter and JEY0.
To 20.3—26.1 (Min - Max) PSI in the Series 2 in the N3R1-14-302 Oil Filter.
This data is from Mazda's GENUINE 2009 Service Highlight Changes between S1 and S2.
So unless ANY aftermarket or NON-Genuine OIL FILTER Brand (Including Mobil) can Guarantee YOU their filter has a min 20 PSI Before it goes into By Pass Mode I would not touch them with a barge pole.
So have a good long think before you use ANY oil filter in your Series 2 RX-8, it is MORE CRITICAL that the correct Filter be used in this model that in the Series 1.
For all the reasons I have posted before on this...
Do your car a favor any ONLY use the N3R1-14-302 from a Mazda Dealer in ANY Renesis II Engine.

JEY0-14-3029A which can be used in a SERIES ONE RX-8 is available from US Mazda Dealers.
This filter is also used in..
Mazda MPV V6, MX6,B2500,B2600,Eunos 30X, MX-3, Eunos 500,800,929 and 626 V6, Astina V6.
As I said it is a Taller filter than the BY61 with a larger internal filter cone.
And in fact Mobil's M1110 is the equivalent for the JEY0., and also used for the above models, BUT NOT the S2 RX-8...

BTW...if you are Searching a Mazda Dealers ON-LINE Site for the JEY0 Oil filter you may get a "Part Number does not exist" because it is a J E Y ZERO, as in Number Zero (0) not Alpha letter O .

I didn't think that they could offer a factory replacement part if it didn't meet or exceed the manufacturers specifications? I just don't think that a company as large as Mobil1 would miss something like that...I just figured they had people much smarter running their business. I am going to call and ask them about this tomorrow and see if I can get some sort of an answer.

Having a look at the Mobil Parts Finder their "Suggested" listings by their Part Numbers are ALL over the place and in some cases JUST PLAIN WRONG to the Genuine Mazda Listings..
http://www.showmetheparts.com/mobil/
Like for a Series 2 RX-8 2009 and 2010 they show 2 Oil Filters a M1110 or a M04612
But for the Series 1 2004-2008 RX-8 they show the M1108 or a M04612, the M04612 for BOTH Series????...Yeah right.
For a 1999 Mazda Millenia they show a M1110 the same as they say for a 2009-10 RX-8 which is wrong, the M1110 is the equivalent to Mazda's JEY0-14-3029A.
The Mobil M1110 was designed and out in the 1990's, BEFORE Mazda even thought of the RX-8, let alone the Series II RX-8 and it's exclusive Oil Filter specially made ONLY for this series two RX-8, so again who is correct...BTW the Mazda N3R1-14-302 Series 2 RX-8 Oil Filter is NOT used in any other Mazda Model.
A 1998 Mazda MPV V6, Mobil shows a M1110 which is correct, but they also show a M04612 which is incorrect, unless the MPV had a Mazda 4 cylinder engine?
A 2004 Miata shows a M1108, which should be correct as Mazda's B6Y1-14-3029A
As I have said, they are not to be trusted...I think a Genuine Mazda Parts Catalog would be the one in the know.
Good luck getting a response from Mobil or Mazda NAO, both useless and Both Don't care, and I got that from a US Mazda Parts Manager who agrees with my findings, to use his words MNAO Parts and Communications is NON existent and Totally Useless.

* That would be a good move!...
Aftermarket Oil Filters may "look good", but it is the filters INSIDES which is the issue, unfortunately you can not see, feel or notice "IF" your filter is By Passing or doing it's job of filtering your engine oil.
For the sake of saving a buck?..or believing their marketing hype ...is it really worth it?..
Cheers

.....have to agree with everything you say....I too used to be in wholesale,... oils and other magic additives...., that will make your hair curl to see the spin the re-sellers put on some of their brews, but litigation laws prevent me from saying any more on an open forum such as this!
The other issue here is that all the sponsors of website forums do have commercial interests in what they say we must or must not do!

Technically if your renew your Oil and Filter as you should you should not have an issue...the By Pass facility in ALL oil filters is there for those Owners who fail to regularly maintain their cars and in the event the filter does become blocked so your engine is not Starved of OIL.
You have to ask yourself WHY did Mazda have an all new Oil Filter made specifically for the Series II RX-8??? , why did they just not stick with the same oil filter they have used for 30 years??..
As I have said before the S2 RX-8 has NO rear Oil Pan Location 'Engine BY Pass Valve' like ALL other Rotaries, all of the Oil supply for S2's goes through the oil filter First then on to do its engine lubrication. In previous rotaries depending on RPM and Oil Viscosity some Oil can be returned back to the Oil Pan without even being filtered...i.e. Going through the Oil Filter.
Mazda increased the size of the filter and with Engine Oil Pressure Upgrades (new oil pump and no Pan Valve), they also deemed it necessary to increase the Oil Filter By Pass Valve PSI by 85% (approx), because their engineers must have noticed the smaller B6Y1 Oil filter going into By Pass mode, they also don't want the By Pass Valve pressure too high as the filter may not go into by pass if in the event it became blocked because a "slack" owner left the Filter on for say 5 years or 90,000 miles.
Kind of preventative maintenence...
It is the same reason for every other brand of car in the event the oil filter is blocked the engine still gets oil, even though it may be Very old and of poor lubricity.
I also just do not want S2 owners using an Oil Filter that is not Rated for their car, yes if you changed it regularly it may be totally fine, but not all car owners are like we club members!..are they...

Tokyo Roki makes great oil filters. In fact, many people in other makes upgrade to RX8 oil filters because they want/need the better quality of the Tokyo Roki and the higher bypass pressure. The Mazda part is $6.25/ea. A filter wrench adapter is like $3 for them. My warranty is with Mazda, so why mess around with cheap stuff or supposedly "better" stuff that doesn't have data to back it up while Tokyo Roki is one of the best out there already and it was spec'd by some of the only engineers in the world who understand/live/breathe/eat/sleep rotary? If you are looking for an awesome mod, look elsewhere...
