"Synthetic oil will eat away your apex seals."
A technician at my favorite shop mentioned that to me at my last oil change. He said synthetic oils have much stronger detergents in them, and they would damage the apex seals because they were made of carbon. I said "I thought the apex seals were made of hardened steel?" He said "well, they're carbon-based." I smelled bullshit so I shrugged and said I'd keep a lookout for compression leaks.
Any idea if synthetic oil might actually cause premature failure of the apex seals, for the reason he stated or for any other reason? The only thing I can think of is synthetic oil might result in increased carbon buildup due to not burning as cleanly, but even that I have no proof for, just speculation.
