ADVAN R6 18x11 +30

Hey 8Club!

Special delivery! These arrived with great haste from the land of the rising sun. Proud to announce that I'm now in possession on what I would consider to be Advan's finest wheel.

I'm very excited to put these on my s2 r3 once I've worn my current tire set down. Primary function will be track use and fitted with Yoko A052 295/30's. Quality is exceptional, extremely lightweight.

Enjoy!

$1000 each kind of nice

not surprised that he can’t afford a scale to show us the actual weight

Thanks guys, I think they're really nice too!

My hopes are that I'll get use the R6's a little later this year. I didn't get to use my r888r's due to 2020 and now they're crazy old by my standards (2019 DOT iirc). Major bummer.

And my scale just broke! Was in-op, be picking a new one soon.

How do you know somebody is bluffing?

They say “lightweight”, but avoid listing what it actually is.

I’ll see and raise you …

Woah! Those appear very fine and offered at an incredible price imo. I would have certainly entertained a set of the LSR's in magnesium with carbon barrels (*possibly, dependent on price) had I not purchased the ADVAN's. My initial impression of their company is very reminiscent of Dymag to me; always wanted a wheel that nice. And you know me, it's hard for me not to buy Japanese. Next time. Thanks for the heads up!

But I did finally get a new scale. Actual weight coming soon.

I looked but couldn’t find a weight, so am not sure where the extremely lightweight term was derived from. Because if anything it seems that wheel weights have been on a rising trend. I’ll be surprised if they’re under 19 lbs. Which to me coupled with a wider tire weight is not that light on a Renesis NA wrt acceleration and not the advantage it might be for autocross. For a track car my preference would be for a narrower wheel/tire, 10” or less, and then it can get down below 16 lbs fairly easy plus a lighter tire is going to equate to quite a lower MOI.

In a pure racing mode application, getting the brakes down to allow 15” wheels, which if you cut the overall chassis weight down is still going to allow equivalent braking capability, is going to pay off big imo coupled with a Hoosier 275/35 or 295/30 15” DOT tire. The 23” OD on those tires coupled with a 4.777 S2 rear gear is going to net the equivalent of the standard 17” sizes having a 5.125 rear gear. This will provide some fairly big weight/MOI reductions that will definitely translate into acceleration gains plus the lateral grip rather than giving up acceleration to gain lateral grip.

This kind of thinking is counter to trends, but is really the way it needs to be approached imo.

Finally made good on my promise to weigh the R6's.

My unscientific bathroom scale pulls an average weight of 18 lbs even. I took 5 measurements and even convinced my wife to do 1 for me, ha (she's quite the trooper.) Pretty impressive imo.

I also included a couple pics of some wheel candy that just arrived from Jp. The lugs are seriously next level and I'm looking forward to getting them tarnished.

Enjoy!

18 lbs is pretty good for an 18x11 wheel

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised as well! ADVAN is a very under-appreciated wheel brand and I've always been a huge fan. Volk / Rays is great and well deserving of the reputation they're earned but imo aren't all they've been made out to be; there are plenty of quality jdm wheel makes deserving of equal praise imo. Anyways, who could've known all the way back in the early 2000's that Japanese car culture would overtake all in the 2020's. I remember countless times being heckled and ridiculed by friends / acquaintances who didn't understand my affinity for the Mazda FD, Japan culture, Option / Best Motoring videos, etc. Funny how the times have changed.

Unfortunately I still won't be using them until I get Brett's turbo mounted up. Hoping for sometime in 2023.

I've been considering contacting LiteSpeedRacing to build me a custom set of RS5's in their MAG alloy. I'm not sure on what spec I'd request but I'm thinking it would be a 'smaller' wheel like my RS-DF's but meant for the baby LEG widebody that's now fitted.

Couple years ago I was going to pull the trigger on a real set of JGTC 18x11 Rays MAG's but they needed a refinish, etc and were quite expensive for what they were being a very old motorsports wheel. Having a brand new set custom made from LSR sounds much more appealing imo. Very curious what an 18x9.5 will weigh.

I agree in general wrt Advan wheels, but the issue tends to be the offset. This one is sort of workable, but for 18x11” a +37 offset would be more optimal on an RX8. They do offer an 18x12 +25 though, which is optimal on an RX8 for that width. Their 10, 10.5”, and 11” sizes are all a bit too far outboard on an RX8 though, which is likely going to be an issue with the front pinch weld at the back chassis side of the front wheel wells. Because some racing classes won’t permit modifying the pinch weld for clearance there.

It’s an issue on 12” too even at the optimum offset because there’s no avoiding the pinch weld once you get that wide coupled with the steering angle sweep back at full steering lock. Limiting the steering angle at full lock is another way to address it though if permitted. A smaller OD tire as well, but the options there are limited. I did bring forward the idea of 15” wheels and tires in an earlier post in this thread, but that has it’s own things that need to be addressed, but there would be some benefits pursuing that imo, again if the competition ruleset permits doing what’s necessary.

There was another JGTC Rays MAG set in 18x12 that I came across (forget the offset rn) but I felt that it would've been too large for my needs at any time (not sure why I felt this way). And again, expensive for being a very old motorsports wheel set that needed a refinish, etc but way huge jdm points (which you know I'm square af about) and would've been fun to have as a working conversation piece imo.

Just thought I'd share this. Quote per LSR website.
'Starting at 14.4 pounds for 18 inch; In many fitment applications, the RS5 will be the lightest or close to lightest wheel available in the whole industry. The RS5 magnesium monoblock is so light, that it can actually be lighter than full carbon fiber wheels'.

I imagine their 18x9.5 MAG alloy could potentially be sub 12 lbs. That's a lot to look forward to imo. Wow.

Geeking out this morning. These bad boys in non-center lug. The 18x12's I saw were black though. The blue 'MAG' color is the most desirable imo.

GT300/500 back in the day was ****.
