I wonder if they could sell the RX-Vision rotary engine, have it be screaming awesome and filled with insane power, be very inefficient, and the like if they launched it under a new Company division such that it might get small volume status/exemption from the EPA? Does anyone know the rules?
Remember 2007 when the 16x was introduced at the Tokyo Auto Show (and then never seen again)?

You want to help the future of the car - please make a comment on the proposed EPA tightening of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. The 30-day comment period has started and the EPA wants to speed up enactment of the legislation prior to Trump's inauguration. This not only affects the RX-Vision but reliability and power of cars of the near future. If the forced reduction in ZDDP (zinc) levels for engine wear didn't get your goat - perhaps the RX-vision reality will. Go to: https://www.epa.gov/dockets/commenting-epa-dockets to make your comments heard.
BTW the RX-8 reliability wouldn't have been an issue if (A) the EPA had tightened environmental standards so drastically and (B) IMO Ford hadn't rushed Mazda into the launch.

Also, the article is missing the word "not":
The automaker is working on a new turbocharged rotary, dubbed Skyactiv-R, but it's clear when (or if) this engine will reach production.
Also, this really rubbed me the wrong way:
"I think that as a sports car option, the MX-5 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter conventional engine, with its power and acceleration, might be a more exhilarating experience," said Kogai.
Seriously, R&T? Can't write clearly?

Maybe it's better to check the original source: http://www.autonews.com/article/2016...-move-upmarket
The relevant parts:
Actually, I'm not sure that the last question is rotary-related at all. It may refer to a Mazdaspeed 6, for example. Or a Mazdaspeed Cx-something.
Honestly in this interview I don't see anything more (or less) than was said by Fujiwara a few weeks ago. He actually confirmed that the rotary range extender would come in 2019. And the answer to the first question is the standard "I can't/don't want to give any specific info" answer.
As in: "we can neither confirm nor deny that there's a new rotary engined sports car coming"
The relevant parts:
Q: Mazda often talks about reviving the rotary engine as a range extender for a hybrid vehicle. Does that mean Mazda has abandoned plans to use it as the main traction powerplant?
A: We ended production of the RX-8 with the rotary engine. But if we were to restart production of the rotary engine again, we need to make sure it wouldn't be just short-lived. We need it to meet future emissions regulations. We are still conducting our r&d activity to overcome any issues we have with emissions and fuel efficiency.
Q: Which would come first, a range-extender rotary or a main traction rotary, like in the RX-8?
A: Considering regulations such as the zero-emissions vehicle mandate, electrification is a technology we need to introduce in the near future. The range extender would be the first.
Q: Could Mazda ever create an RX-8 sports car successor with a range extender?
A: I think that as a sports car option, the MX-5 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter conventional engine, with its power and acceleration, might be a more exhilarating experience.
Q: No plans for a larger sports car entry? (EDIT: Automotive News have edited this question. See the link)
A: No.

It seems pretty definitive to me:
They don't have any plans to produce a sports car larger than the MX-5 at the moment. They are still trying to figure out if/how a rotary can be more than a limited production run.
This sounds reasonable. Automakers like to double-dip on as much technology as possible. It probably too expensive to have an engine that can only be used in a single low-volume product.

You must have received an A in Logic. Yes no large rotary plans + no car bigger than a Miata = rotary Miata.

TTAC's title for the article is a little less ambiguous:
